I'm not sure that the wattage increases and time to charge are linear -- e.g. I'm don't believe that 7.5W will charge 50% faster than 5W. Also, the wireless charging should also be about the same speed as the standard little charging block that comes with iPhones (until iPhone12 .. that comes with no charger..hah) but way slower than a quick charger that can prob do 20W+.
Except the new 12’s will do 15w wireless charger with the MagSafe charger. That is impressive.

For MAX phone owners, and really any iPhone 12 owner, probably better off getting a MagSafe charger to keep plugged in the center console. Just snap the phone on and go!

I have wireless charging, but as I'm not using my phone while driving, the USB c charging cable does just fine

Good news - it does fit (I should have cleaned my car before I took the photo):

Unfortunately, doesn't fit with a case on. Even the silicone ones.

Well, that’s kind of what I figured would happen—that it would fit without a case but probably not with. Thanks.

I am going caseless this year and purchased AppleCare. Always wanted to go casesless, so this gives me an excuse.

Yes exactly. Got mine on the weekend and with the silicone case on it does NOT fit. Fits nicely without any case on. I'm sure there may be 3rd party cases that will let it fit though in time...

FWIW I noticed it fit easily in the lovely accessible tray on the new X3...

So, the question has been, will the new one fit?

Well, to find out, I ordered an inexpensive, low profile silicone case from Amazon that was delivered today. It seems very similar to the Apple silicone cases I typically use.

Without a phone in the case, I can get it to fit in the tray. I can also get it to fit with my iPhone 11 in the case, but there is still some give on either end because it is about .01" or so smaller than the 12.

So, I stuck a coin in the end of the case to tried to fill the gap to make sure it wasn't the gap allowing it to fit. With the coin in there, it will NOT go all the way down to sit at the bottom of the tray but does get close enough for it to charge.

I'm still not 100% that the fit is identical to what it will be if the actual phone was in the case, but I think it SHOULD work. Also, if you are NOT using a case, I think the phone itself would probably fit just about the same as my iPhone 11 with the silicone case on.

I guess we'll find out for sure next week, but food for though for those considering the new phone but concerned about wireless charging capability in the case like I am.

As I have a 2021 M550 inbound now to replace my 2018 540, I'm a little surprise that the same car that touts being the first to work with Apple Car Key (which, if I'm not mistaken, requires the phone to be in the tray for it to start the car) may NOT work with Apple's new flagship phone. Seems like that's a planning or communications fail on BMW's part.

Also I wonder if BMW will eventually alter and/or make possible retrofit of the charging tray to make it work if it does not. It seems like there is some room to get rid of some material on the sides.
Any update on a potential fix/updated part/solution?

The 12 Pro Max is definitely not fitting in the charging tray with the OEM Apple Leather case. Tried to wedge it in, but even if it did eventually make contact with the electric charger, it would be a hassle to remove.

It seems to barely fit with no case, but I'd pick not being able to use the charging tray over the no-case life.

I used the tray quite a bit with my XS max (with OEM Apple Leather case), and am pretty disappointed it's no-longer functional for my use case. Pretty convenient feature, and was one of the main options (6NW Wireless Charging) my G30 needed to have.

Just picked up my new 2021 540i today, can confirm that iPhone Pro Max in standard Apple leather case will not fit into center console try. For me, charging is not the issue; wanted to use the iPhone as a Digital Key, and to start the car it must fit flush on the console pad. Guess I will have to try using the card instead. Was hoping to be able to leave the fob home...

I ordered the iPhone 12 Pro Max. After receiving the Apple leather case first, I quickly realized that the phone doesn't fit into my 2021 M550i charger. I returned the iPhone and case and ordered the smaller iPhone 12 Pro and Apple leather case. All good now!

No - iPhone 11 Pro and Max had the exact same camera specs.
Buy a peel brand case for the 12pro max and it will fit and charge just fine. I use the hard clear one and it also makes the phone easier to hold I find.

I don't suppose anyone knows if a Samsung S21 Ultra would fit? Before I bother going and buying one...

CnSky - What is that case made out of? It is hard plastic or the softer silicone material?

I originally ordered the iPhone12 Pro Max for the improved camera, but after seeing the reviews, the iPhone12 Pro camera suits my needs. I also found from owning a previous iPhone Max, that one hand operation is difficult.

I’m quite happy with the smaller Pro and it fits nicely with the Apple leather case into my 2021 M550i charging cubby hole.

Mike I have a hard plastic clear version but it's not super hard. I like it as it keeps the square design feeling. Also I find it easier to hold than a normal case not sure why.

They also have rubberised versions.

I was quite annoyed when I picked up my 2021 M550i and couldn't put my iPhone 12 Pro Max (with a case) in the wireless charging tray. The phone fits fine without a case, so I tried going without a case for a few days but the phone is way too slippery for that. And it's prone to scratching. So I found a case on Amazon that's only 0.35mm thick on all sides, and so far my phone fits into the charging tray with a little bit of a push. It's a super tight fit but it works and it charges the phone. I wish they would've made the tray bigger but it is what it is! Link below for the case I bought:

I see a world where one of the deciding factors for us choosing future cars is whether the phone fits in the tray!
