How do you feel about your G30?

I just finished up a driveway wash and thought to myself, "Man, I love this car."

For context, I've owned many 5 series over the years. Three e39s (an auto 528i and two 6-speed manual 540i m-sports), three e60s (6-speed manual 535i and two 6-speed manual 550i m-sports), and two F10s (6-speed manual 550i m-sport and an auto M5).

This car blows them away. (Yes, even the sublime-handling e39s.)

Sure, it helps that I have a fully loaded, top-of-the-line example, but this truly is the ultimate driving machine. The power, handling, technology, and luxury are unmatched at this price point. At least when it comes to anything I've ever owned. Basically, this car never fails to put a smile on my face.

How about y'all?

haven't had as many 5s as you, just a E39 530i msport, and a F10 530d msport and now a 540i xdrive msport.

Yeh I think its a great car and certainly an improvement over the F10

I still wish I had never got rid of my e39 but didn't have the space to keep it as I still felt that was probably my favourite of all time.
I owned that from new for 10 years and always looked forward to driving it.
It always felt like a quality car and just not quite sure the G30 matches my feelings about it as I did on the E39.

When I park up, I still look back to look at my G30 so I guess that probably answers your question.

I think the G30 is a damn fine car but there is just one area I would like improvement on , and that's the steering. Give me the steering from my E39 (and dump the autonomous stuff) and It would be nears as close to perfect in my eyes. Steer is numb and that's the one thing I miss.
Other than that, I think mine is a keeper for quite some time yet.

Love my M550. Best car I have ever owned. A few minor annoyances in the software and settings I'd like to change....wish it remembered all the settings instead of defaulting back to off on ASS, etc, but minor, as I said. The power, handling, luxury and comfort are tops. Just like you, I smile each time I drive it.

Mine is my first BMW so I don’t have the brand history that you do to draw on. I also went for the efficiency side of the spectrum with a 530e so I don’t have the power you have (not that I am left wanting in anyway). I still love the car.

I switched from Mercedes and there things I miss about that car compared to this one. The Mercedes was a C300 so more akin to the 3-Series. I feel the weight and size of the car as expected. But it was the last year the C-Class didn’t have drive by wire. So the road connection just felt so much better. I felt the road whereas in my G30 it feels much number. But a lot better than the drive by wire system Mercedes puts on its newer cars. If there was anything I would improve it would be steering feel.

But the package this car brings to the table is great and I still smile every time I looks at it.

I love my 540i M sport, however I have been getting some rattles in the sunroof part at low speeds on bumpy roads. This only happens when the sunroof cover is back and the sunroof is closed. The dealership could not replicate the sounds and said it was the seatbelt from the passenger side. Other than that, the car is almost fully loaded and is perfect to drive!

I agree that the G30 is a very good car. I bought my '18 540 and plan to keep it.

That said, the steering and handling on the E60 was better, in my opinion. My E60 was a 535 Msport with dynamic drive/ars and the car cornered FLAT and felt very composed at speed. The G30 drives bigger (dimension, not weight) and doesn't feel quite as composed.

I would definitely be willing to spend some money to improve the steering. The one subpar attribute of an otherwise fantastic car.

I think the G30 is near perfect minus the steering. It's way too numb coming from an E90. If we got the old school BMW hydraulic steering, then I'd think the G30 would be next to perfect as a German super saloon.

It's my first BMW and I really feel that it ticks all of my wants. As long as it keeps up with normal maintenance it should be the car I've owned for the longest amount of time.

Fully agree with the other comments here - the G30 is an incredibly good machine! Looking at how car prices have inflated just in the last 2-3 years as well I can't see myself changing for a while yet. Especially as I've only done about 1,000 miles in the last 6 months!

I've truly enjoyed my M550i. Great for highway cruising, and doesn't get embarrassed on twisty roads. Smooth, quiet, great torque, tons of luxury, few flaws.

But I'm moving on to something different, an X3M. Its an SUV that's a screamer. I'll miss the V8 but have fun in a different way.

How do I feel about my G30?
  • Incredible bang for the buck when you lease. No comparison to Benz or Audi. These leases would be hundreds of dollars more a month for a comparable car.
  • Good handling.
  • Good tech.
  • More than enough performance for everyday driving out of 540xi.
  • Pre-LCI exterior design (compared to F10) was uneventful, weak.
  • Post-LCI brought some more road presence and aggressive styling, but still my absolute pet peeve is the borderline flat sheet of aluminum as the hood. Where is the beautifully sculpted hood from F10? Guess we gotta go F90 now. Pity.

Hey did you notice the sunroof cracking happen in cold weather or warm? I noticed it around sunset time on the highway.

Totally agree. Hate the hood. Is f90 M5 hood and play if swapped?

I love my wife's M550i, sometimes even more than my M3. It pretty much checks all of the boxes as a performance family sedan.

I enjoy the heck out of my 540i. With limited luxury brand dealerships on the Island of Maui the other choices basically were MB or Lexus. I think iDrive blows away the competition as an infotainment interface. The lease deal was good due to incentives and is a great alternative over buying- though I still might buy when the lease is up as the mileage will be quite low. I love the relative firmness and stance of the 704 suspension. This vehicle is for me the perfect daily driver since I'm not into SUV's yet.

The not perfect list - sure the electronic steering is a little numb, the ventilated seats don't get cold blowing just ambient cabin air, and I can't buy Bootmod3 because BMW will update my software and kill the ability to ECU tune through OBD port. The iDrive seems to cache the FLAC album covers on my USB and when I tag edit to correct any errors there is no good way to clear the cache so the errors persist despite correction. I agree with the bland hood styling comments above.

It happened at all times, mainly when suncover was open. Since replaced seals, car is super quiet. Drove me crazy.

Well, I couldn't be happier with my G30. It's my second one. 2018 M550 and now my 2020. Couldn't pass up on the additional HP. You know how that goes. Do I need 530 HP? No. Do I want 530 HP? Yes! It's a year old in two weeks and actually I love it more now than when I took delivery. Simply because now I have it just the way I want it. For me, the best match for the trim with the rosso corsa is gloss black, so all the cerium trim, grill, fender vents and brake duct trim, trunk emblem and lower rear bumper trim was changed over to gloss black. CF mirror caps and rear spoiler are MPerformance. I looked around for several months at different wheel options and ended up with the M850i (728M) gloss black wheels. IMO, perfect!

The car is the perfect blend of performance and comfort and trust me, with 35 new car purchases over the years, I have a good sample size with which to compare. It's only my fourth BMW car, (X1 MSport, M4 and two 550's) but I'll not switch brands in the future.

It it perfect? No, but then nothing in this world is, including cars. Like others, I'd love a more connected steering feel and an ASS button with a memory, but after that, there's nothing more that bothers me.
