This is why BMW publishes a manual. Even available on your phone and contains all kinds of useful details...

Cars manual was missing. But thanks.

I suppose any fob can be synced... I should go test drive an M5CS with my fob just in case they are closed later.

You can access the digital manual at BMWUSA with the VIN. You can also install the manual app on your phone and have it on you in your pocket. You can also access it in iDrive in the car.

Er...that would be a NO. You can not use a key from another BMW to start your BMW.

Each BMW has it's own (ISN) individual serial number where the key and other modules communicate with each other. Only a key that matches the same ISN that has been coded to your car will start your car (and vice versa).

Foiled AGAIN... it’s like they anticipated this. I am being held back by the MAN.

Isn’t that steering column location also where you can place your iPhone and start your car without a key - in the newer models?

No. That location is in case of battery dies out from the remote key fob and through induction the car is able to read the keycode and allows to start the car normally.

The plot thickens... thanks. That is cool.

Now if I can only figure out how to close my trunk with remote... but that is another thread.

So many features, so few BMW Geniuses.

One other thing I notice about that 'spot' is that if I get into my car without the key, and try to start it, once I go fetch that key I have to hold it to the steering column to start the car the first time.

Maybe a 'warning' that an attempt was made to start the car without the key in proximity???

Huh... I have not had that happen in mine. Lord knows I have opportunity.

My wife can attest to my ‘routine’ of jumping into car and then returning to key drawer for FOB or bedroom for wallet, or couch for my phone.

It’s how my activity tracker ensures I meet my step goals.

Perhaps your fob battery is dying? I haven’t had this occur yet. And I hate to admit it, but I have done this a few times. Try to start the car only to be reminded to go grab my key!

that shouldn't happen. 13 years of bimmers, I've never had to hold it up to that area after numerous attempts to start the car without a key fob present then starting after its retrieval. If you have a new battery in the fob, have your service adviser check it out.
