The difference between a good handling car and a great handling car is is how it transitions at the limit and lets you know you are approaching it. Late-model vehicles are dangerous because of the computer assisted handling that Dynamic Stability Control (BMW's name) provides the driver a false sense of security. Great handling cars have the similar software systems yet still have suspension designs that excel at 9/10ths and 10/10ths, less capable designs just lose it as the outer edges of the laws of physics are investigated, either on purpose or by accident. The GV80 probably felt similar at near its limits to the quality hardware Tiger drives, and then he got to the edge and it let go on him rather than tell Tiger he was not in a Lambo et.al he is used to driving and drop the speed while the laws of physics were still at play.
Why is the GV80 pinpointed (BTW not just you but a few others)? Because it's a Hyundai? If he was driving an X5 or Caddy XT6, would you be saying he "out-drove the capabilities" of them? If he's used to driving Lambos et al then you could say he's not used to driving not just GV80 but any SUV's in general with poorer handling characteristics and higher center of gravity.

The IIHS has yet to review the GV80 but it did selected the Genesis G70 Sedan and G90 Sedan as two of its 2020 Top Safety Picks. LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said the outcome could've been far worse: "The cabin of the vehicle was more or less intact, the front end was totally destroyed, the bumpers, everything was destroyed, airbags deployed all of that, however, thankfully the interior was more or less intact, which kind of gave him the cushion to survive what otherwise would’ve been a fatal crash." So apparently the GV80 saved him.

If I had to guess at this early point, I'd say he was likely distracted (like possibly talking on the phone or texting) while driving, and lost control at high speed due inattention. Due to SUV's (all SUV's) being more prone to rollovers, that likely exacerbated the extent of the accident, but in the end the safety features of the vehicle saved him.

Agree, people are also acting like he only drives sports cars or vehicles with superior handling. The man has owned SUV's before, from an Escalade to MB ML, Buick Enclave etc. His Escalade also suffered a similar fate as the Genesis crossing a median strip. He is use to driving normal cars.

Yeah well he certainly doesn't drive them well. History proves that.

Hence why I mentioned the Escalade he crashed. The point was he doesn't only drive sports cars and is not purely use to that like some were arguing. He's a poor driver regardless of type of vehicle.

Totally agree. Wealthy celebrity with access to any vehicle of their desire does not equate to being a good or competent driver.

My take aways from this crash

1: Tiger drives vehicles like shit...always has
2: He was clearly speeding and either fell asleep at the wheel or was texting
3: That Genesis was WELL EFFIN BUILT!

I mean looking at that crash, which was apparently a roll over, the passenger compartment was well in tact. The roof was not buckled at all, the panoramic glass was not even cracked and Tiger only messed up his legs...I mean looking at the truck that was best case scenario!

if it wouldve been sports/exotic car, this would have been a lot worse. Maybe fatal.

There corrected that for you

They couldn’t get the Model X to rollover in the testing and the first an only SUV to receive a perfect score in the rollover test.

Agreed to a certain extent.

Some of them hold up remarkably well.

Did those Tesla rollover tests only involve trying to roll the car on a flat surface? I suspect any vehicle is capable of rolling over when it hits a concrete curb at speed like Tiger's vehicle did.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned is the “accident avoidance” technology in many new cars. I don’t know if the Genesis has it, although I suspect it does.

Our 2018 Volvo has it. The lane departure is annoying and the first few times it comes on it is easy to overreact to - because it feels like I’m rubbing a curb or whatever. Today driving down I-75 in the left lane, going around Knoxville, traffic came to an abrupt stop. 70mph to stop very quickly. I got on the brake with moderate pressure, enough to slow it quickly, and started to move to the left shoulder just in case. But the accident avoidance braking kicked in, slammed the brakes on, making the front tires skip, and scared the shit out of me.

Point being if anything caused those systems to activate, Tiger might have been startled, overreacted and crashed.

This might be the genesis of a few tasteless jokes.
To tee them up, I suppose even the best drivers can end up in the rough.
It seems obvious now that sponsors should reconsider providing courtesy cars; a good driver would be a better choice.
I certainly hope Tiger makes a full recovery, but wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a new handicap.

My wife read that and said, “Jokes. One, Two, Three, FORE!”

The NHTSA test is setup to resemble a vehicle hitting a curb and digging into a soft surface...

Yes, I saw that. Don't get me wrong the Tesla is superior in that regard but that is a highly controlled test at a relatively low speed. Do that test at 60mph instead of what appears to be 25-30mph in the video and the Tesla would roll over. Have Tiger behind the wheel going at a high rate of speed, no braking apparently and hit the curb as the car exits the road and I suspect even the Tesla would have rolled.
