Stutter/Hesitation - Intermittent

So 2 yrs and 2 months of flawless driving (smooth in every respect), my car has started stuttering every 3/4 days in a random way.. just for a few seconds per trip. Accelerating slightly solves it immediately...

9/10 its ever so subtle, but on the 10th time it is disconcerting and really feels like it will stall.. happens cold or warm, even at 70mph in cruise control once..

So it went to the garage today (specialists assigned by lease company, not BMW but over the road from them), and they found NOTHING... the bloke said there is no errors in the logs etc.

Anyone else had it?

Check thread on "Issues with G30 crankshaft sensor" and this link

Possible similar symptoms?

Cheers

Hi. I had the exact same problem. It was a faulty EGR valve. However, its the not the same fault as the one they are doing the recall for. My EGR was failing to adjust to the varying outside temperature settings.

The standard EGR test the dealer will do won't pick this up. They need to check how it performs under various external temperatures. PM me if you want any more details / a contact at my local dealer that will be able to help.

Took to BMW today - Technician says EGR and Software

So I dropped off car at BMW Heathrow today and took Technician on test drive

Stuttered all over the place during the test drive thankfully.... Tech guy seemed experienced and said he was almost certain the behaviour was faulty EGR valve....

Also saw it still had original factory software so will upgrade whole car/modules to latest versions, he said loads of fixes and performance improvements in there

Fingers crossed

So got it back, no EGR issue, but software fully updated on every module and it is back to 100%

Feels better than when new, so smooth and predictable, and everything works just dandy

I spoke too soon, still faulty

hollpe would be grateful if you can please PM me the details oft he place that fixed your G30

Despite having it for two days (Full SW upgrade), + the recall for the EGR valve (didn't change it, just patched software)... it STILL damned well stutters at low revs .. this is so frustrating

I have it booked in for 5th August now... what a PITA

EGR Changed - Healthy again

So had the EGR valve changed on 5th August, at last car is back to normal... 2 days driving and it has not shown any issues

Be ready to be very assertive with BMW if you have the same issue....

4 visits and it's cost them a lot of labour, and they even had the chance to change it after an EGR valve recall job, but left it in...

You have to understand that most of these grease monkeys are no mechanics (People who actually troubleshoot problems) but parts changers. When they plug in the computer don't see or find a code they don't know what to do or rather start changing parts to see what sticks and what doesn't it.

True mechanics by training/profession/experience understand the possible root causes to most problems and take it from there.

520D stutter

My 2017 520D stutters very slightly sometimes as described above. On gentle re-acceleration after coasting it hesitates. Sometimes it is worse than others. Can i take it that it is definitely caused by a faulty/sticking EGR valve?

Wouldn't hurt, probably was part of the recall but you never got written to.

I can't say definitely, but the best probable cause, take it in and get to enjoy your car again...
