OTA updates for early 2020 Models?

I have a vague recollection that the early 2020 models shipped without the OTA capability loaded in ID7 and that it would require a visit to the dealer for upgrading at a later time. I had my 530e in for alignment in Feb and no software update was shown as being available at that time. Does anyone have any info on this?

There is a major software update released this month for BMWs with RSU. Unfortunately, a 2020 G30 does not support this feature.

The jury is still out on whether we can have this update done at the dealership. There are some features we will definitely not get because our cars don’t have the proper hardware.

You can get the new (July) features (mainly android auto) with a dealer update.
I have an early 2020 G30, and just had this done. All works

The press release also says that the maps are improved, are faster, destination entry easier, poi info ‘contextualised’, Intelligent Assistant improved and new design. Do you think your update provides all of this or that in ID7 Lite it’s really only Android ? If that all it is I won’t bother with the upgrade now, but wait until the car is in for something else

why did this remove remote updates from newer G30's?

For MY20 BMW decided to switch to iDrive7 but did not upgrade other vehicle modules that are needed to allow RSU. For MY21 they are upgrading all necessary modules so full iDrive7 and RSU will be supported.

It's a small annoyance. Just take your car in and ask for the upgrade so you can use Android Auto.

The RSU update has not been released. It's estimated to be released September/October, however if issues are discovered it will be delayed. BMW takes a cautious approach to releasing RSU updates.

Happy to take a video if you don't believe me.

If you have a MY20 G30 your dealer reprogrammed your car, you didn't get it through RSU because you don't have RSU.

The RSU update is a different animal and for vehicles that support RSU. BMW will be waiting to release the RSU and it will very likely be a different version than what is programmed by your dealer.

So, um yes.

Read the press release... JULY

And to be clear... I updated my car (I have an ICOM and ISTA) the dealer just synced my FASTA data for the App push.

I could care less about bmw press releases. LMK when you hear of someone with an RSU supported car that receives the update via RSU.

I hear the first vehicle to get the RSU is the 7 series since the MY21 came out March and early production didn't include the updated features. Again, we shall see. Don't hold your breath for it coming next week. Lol

And you probably don't care (until you do) but be careful as your car can get flagged. It's not common, however newer cars have tls certificates so the modules can communicate securely. A MY20 G30 doesn't really have that except for possibly between the MGU head unit the telematics module. But beware as some dealers look the other way while other dealers flag cars and report them to bmwna. Few owners have real world problems, but it happens.

It is July software, but for precautionary reasons with potential bugs in new software, it is not OTA until later.

Correct, and if BMW deems the July software to be unreliable, it could end up being November software with an OTA end of year or early 2021.

So, my early 2020 model does not currently have OTA update capability. As I read the responses to the question I posed, it appears that:
--I will have to wait for a dealer installed update which may be as late as the end of this year/early next year, if it happens at all.
--after that, I will have OTA update capability for whatever BMWNA decides to release for an OTA update.

In the U.K. the pre July 2020 G30’s (ID7 Lite) will never receive RSU (remote software updates) - I have an internal BMW document saying this - the cars do not have the ‘necessary equipment’. Over the air maps have been available and do work. The post July 2020 update installed by a dealer on an ID7 Lite car will also have some other functionality missing as the Intelligent Assistant in Lite is not as comprehensive as the full version.

In BMW speak - ID7 Lite is Service Pack 15 and the full version is Service Pack 18. Other models with SP15 - Lite from July 2019 were F90, G32, G01 & G02.

I'm glad you were able to get yours done. Was it free of charge? I took mine to South Bay BMW in Torrance, CA and was told it would be $455.00 because BMW NA wouldn't pay them to do the update. I was told it was only free for people who's vehicles support OTA updates.

I was told the same thing in the UK for my ID7 Lite 530e. The Genius reported to BMW I had some unresolved issues such as intermittent Spotify and they approved a free update. The dealer said that software updates by them are always chargeable except when required by a recall or “issues”.

My other issues which seemed to help bring the free update was destinations sent by the app not being received in the car, Email unavailable (not Office 365) and predicted parking not being available.

The dealer will want to charge, even for a car that supports OTA updates. The updates are only free at the dealer if there are "issues" as Wivenhoe noted. Basically, the dealer is paid if they can't "warranty" it to BMW and BMW will only warranty "problems".

That being said, there are enough software issues with the initial iDrive 7 to warrant a free update under those rules. There are quite a few TSBs that you can use to make it an easy conversation with the dealer. I believe one of them is the interior motion alarm not always deactivating when the key is used among others.

Ironically my destinations aren't going to the car when sent from the app, the app doesn't lock my car anymore and every few days, I have to log into Spotify. Thanks for the info

Thank you for the info. Along with other things like my Spotify and Connected drive having intermittent issues, my interior monitor doesn't always deactivate and my nav screen always goes blank or has lines going across. I'll definitely bring all of that up at my next service

Definitely. I haven't had any issues with my center display or any of the displays honestly. Before or after the update.

Hopefully the update sorts it and you don't need a head unit swap.

The Genius suggested I send a destination from the website and not the app. It worked and then, maybe coincidently, it worked from the My BMW app, not the Connected Drive one. It sounds like you have the same issues I had - in the past they did a complete software re-install and then last July’s update and the issues were resolved, other than no email. I can set up the email accounts on the website but nothing comes to car.
