How long for production to start?
I just got a 2018 M550 allocation for June and had my build go into the production bank over a week ago.
Does anyone have an idea of how long it'll take to get assigned a VIN or production number so I can track it through BMW Genius? Also I'm seeing different production to delivery times looks like the average is about 2 months has anyone in the West US gotten theirs within 1 month? Thanks! |

Mine was built in early November. It had to go to the Oxnard port and then on a truck to my dealership. I got it the last week in December.
But, as the saying goes, your mileage may differ. |

Go here and signup and enter the production number the dealer gave you and you can track the progress of your build. No way will you get it in a month on the west coast. More like two months or slightly more. The boat ride alone is about three weeks. |

BMW uses Wallenius Wilhelmsen for Port Hueneme deliveries. Once you know the build has been completed, you can use the Wallenius website to check on when your ship leaves and when it will arrive.

Ehh, it doesn't work all the time. I know my car is on a WW ship, but my vin doesn't show up on their website.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I did a build on my 2015 M4 and that took almost 4 freakin months due to the CF roof shortage.
Does anyone know how soon the dealer gets the production number for the car so I can track its progress and see when it goes into production? My build got put into the allocation database for June but haven't been assigned anything yet. Thanks! |

I think my VIN was available right at or before actual production started.

What some dealers do is they have no production number, and they string you along while they wait for one because they don't want to lose the sale to another dealer. |

Actually they string you along because they don't have an allocation for the car, not because they don't have a production number. If that's the case the order just sits there in neutral until they get an allocation from BMW for your build. |

I order my cars from a dealer in California. I got lucky and he had an allocation that was scheduled to go into production a week later.
I’m on the glorious leader due at port huememe June 17, then another 5-10 days to get to dealer. In total about 7 weeks. If I’m lucky six. |

Thanks for the feedback guys, I also thought it was kinda unusual not to get a production number right away, so rather than wait and have high hopes for nothing I pulled the trigger on an existing M550, let me know what you guys think...

Build and Ship Time
My 2018 540 ix build started 6/8/18 and just today, 6/30/18 the BMW USA site... where I can track my orders progress shows it is now in transit (out of port and on a ship to the West Coast USA). That is 22 days. It sat at the port with another 5000 other vehicles for nearly a week.
I expect approximately another 30 days to ship across the Atlantic and make periodic stops before it arrives at my dealer. Then it will go to a shop for a couple days for a front end paint protection film and ceramic pro exterior and interior coating. Window tinting is also planned. Then....I can drive it. I apologize in advance if the following question had been answered before...can I postpone European delivery date or it is set in stone after I placed the order?

If your 550i was built after June 26 2018 then you may have to wait a while. All deliveries of the 550i are on a delivery hold until an oil pan contamination problem is fixed. There's been no update as to when deliveries can resume.
