I had a tire with about 2000 miles on it plugged because of a screw in the middle of the tread. I did not drive on it at all when the pressure was low. No issues after the plug was completed. Go onto Tire Rack's website. It has a list of manufacturers and their policies for plugging run flat tires. Of course, if the tire is in bad condition because it has been driven with low pressure it should not be plugged. Also, of course, you could buy a new tire—but if the manufacturer is okay, why treat differently than a non run flat tire?
