I literally just clicked off a 3.53 second 0 to 60 and a 11.67 second quarter mile lifting at the top end. I posted the screenshots in the dedicated quarter mile thread. I'm very pleased with the performance….bone stock

Regarding the Carbahn tune, I considered that also for my 2020 M550i but it seems that they use the same tune for both the pre-2020 TU2 and 2020+ TU3 engines. I called to ask if they use the same tune for both, but couldn't get a good answer from them. The dyno run they posted showing a 100 hp gain was clearly run on a TU2. If I'm right, switching to something like BM3 which has a dedicated TU3 tune could be a better option for 2020+ models.

Holy shit! These 2020+ cars are starting to put down unreal numbers.

I read a cool article where they say the 2020+ updated motor internals with new turbos, crank, rods, pistons, ignition, etc.......are Very tuner happy for additional HP.

I wonder what the Trans limits will be though.

There's a guy on the M5 side who just dipped into the 9's and ran the 1/4 at 129mph. Must be the transmission and launch that are holding the M550 back.

I’m pretty sure the transmission can handle 800whp easily, second gear isn’t usable it spins with awd going from 1-2 making second gear almost unusable, so it short shifts to third still running high 10s doing that

What I understand is you can/will break transfer cases and front diffs. The M550i was designed before the M5 and missed out on the M5 gear. There was a guy on facebook who broke them in his 2018.

I would imagine the M5 transfer case would fit, but I don't know about the diff as the ratio might be different.

The M5 has the same torque output as the M550i so I expect its transfer case and front diffs are no more robust. I'm hoping that somebody comes out with beefed up replacements that can stand a 600+ whp tune since the engine itself seems robust enough.

I'm not sure. I've seen M5s making big torque and not spitting diffs and transfer cases but I've not researched it all that much.

They actually use the same trans in the SRT Hellcats & Demons….the weak link is definitely not the trans. M550i uses the same trans as the M5

and even the 540i. The 540 has a different part#, but it's an 8 speed ZF. Perhaps different gear ratios and torque rating. It's a great trans.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZF_8HP_transmission

As I perused the link, I see the Hellcat has a higher torque rating..

Thanks for the link. The BMW technical training docs also confirm that we have the GA8HP75Z variant, which supports 750 Nm of torque. Dodge and Rolls Royce use the 900 Nm variant. That begs the obvious question of whether it's possible to swap any of the higher torque models into the G30 with appropriate tuning. I don't see any word about whether they are physically interchangeable. It looks like the G12 BMW 760Li uses the 900 Nm variant so that could be promising.

It certainly does beg the question.

Even if the housing may be a little different, I would imagine the internals can be swapped.

I'm certainly no expert, but it's my understanding that the housing itself is one of the key components that determines the strength of a transmission or other type of gearbox.

Distance between shafts, thickness of gears and angle of teeth on the gear also play a part of strength. The more of the angle on the gear (helical gear), the more of a thrust load you have and a beefier transmission housing is required. If you use a straight cut gear you minimize thrust load, not needing such a beefy case. There is a weight savings and an increase of efficiency, but straight cut gears produce a lot of noise. It's a balancing act. Now my interest is piqued and have to research this.

And this reminds me that the M5 has a beefed up transfer case output flange (google it).

I would comment that the Audi RS6/RS7 C7 runs the 8HP90 and they start to get slip issues at 1000hp and 1000+nm at the wheels and can be rebuilt to be stronger. XHP tune when available will help temporarily.
