I think most of the difference between M5's and 550s is occurring over the first 330ft. M5's have a lot more tyre and the transmission allows launch control with traction control off.

Have you tried putting larger tires on yet?

Isn't it darned near impossible to launch these beasts without traction control? I for one would probably go through three engines and eight trannies before I perfected that skill.

Seriously though, does tire width really make that much of a difference? I always thought that a few mm wider on PS4s only bought you a couple hundredths of a second.

I would have thought so. Better/newer tyres I suspect make more of difference than width and that difference would only be in say the first 60ft or so.

Correct. The transfer case and front differential are the same in m550 & M5.

‘The M5’s transfer case is also reinforced, as are the front and rear propshafts.”

Ah thats something I wasn't aware of, the M5 has a shorter final dive as well. So that's the icing on the cake... More torque at the wheels + higher redline in each gear + less electronic interference + more rubber = better launches.

here are my runs from yesterday with 2 ppl on board..
my 550i has 623 HP and 870 Nm after instaling race box
i think it can go lower than 3,5 from 0-100 with low fuel tank and better weather. But i think 100-200 is quite fast

The Racechip Dyno video diary for the M550i showed 593ps from the piggy back. Was interested what made yours different to reach 623?

I hate to tell you, but with a 3.5 second 0-100kmh, your car is making about 600hp. This calculator has been super accurate for me over the years:

Using that link, 600 bhp, a curb weight of 4,456 pounds, and automatic transmission gets me a 3.95 second 0-100 time. Am I doing something wrong?

Im quite sure it will go under 3.5.. it was under 7 C* when i was doing best 100-200 and summer tires seemed to loose some grip on start. I ve made only 4 tries. I hope to upload more soon only with me on board.

Ah nice so you do have a Dyno of before and after!

Was that dyno measuring brake horsepower or at the wheels? If at the wheels, both curves look substantially better than the stock rating of 523 hp, 550 lbft, even allowing for the fact that the official BMW numbers are usually a little low.

If you use 600hp, weight of 4,600lbs, AWD and dual-clutch it comes out to 3.48 seconds.

That calculator was created in 2004, when automatic transmissions were SLOW. Our current automatics are almost the same speed as the dual-clutch on the website.
