Great technical write up of the PHEV system (530e, 740e)
Just came across this. If you ever wanted to take a closer look at the electric motor integrated into the transmission, and how the system components interact. Some fun facts I learned:
the AC is only powered from the hybrid battery, no more mechanical connection to the engine. up to 10% pressure on the brake pedal will not engage the actual brakes, it will simply increase charging (I'm hoping that this will reduce brake wear) https://x-engineer.org/automotive-en...-architecture/ |

I came across this post from a google search function, I'm glad you found it. It helped answer everything I had about how the multiple powertrains interact with each other. Learned a few new things too, thanks for posting!
*Yes I know this is a dead thread, figured I would give some appreciation where it is due. |

does the electric motor power before or after the gearbox? how does it do 4wd with electric? do you change gears when on electric? |

It does 4WD just like the ICE variation does since 4WD is handled downstream from the transmission. Yes, the car changes gears on electric. Although a single gear is popular in many BEVs it is less efficient as speeds increase. |

If you think about it, the electric motor runs in parallel, on the same drive shaft (clutches permitting) as the ICE. There is therefore a limited rev range for the motor, compared to the full BEV motor. Using the gearbox for the PHEV is the simple solution.
