Tires & AWD Dilemma

Hey guys,

So I’m in the market for a set of Michelin pilot 4s. My question is regarding who you guys have used/ if you’ve ever been able to get your damaged tires covered via road hazard by any company.

Here’s the dilemma, I can buy a set of new tires from wherever, discount, big O, Firestone, Costco, etc. most places offer some sort of tire replacement/pro-rate based on tread if the tire is damaged and can’t be fixed. The issue is that if one tire is damaged and needs to be replaced I would need an entire new set (since the car is AWD) so in my head this road hazard (which usually costs like $50-80 per tire extra) seems completely pointless unless I’m missing something.

I can’t think of any realistic situation where I wouldn’t have to replace all 4 tires in the event of catching a nail in the sidewall or something like this. Does this mean that everytime you need to replace one tire you’re just SOL and out $2k for a new set? Where do you guys buy your tires? Who have you guys used to warranty your tires? The tire guy I spoke to today mentioned Michelin themselves have a pretty good warranty program but I’m not familiar with the details of how it works.

Obviously this is my first AWD vehicle. Also, is an alignment 100% required with a new set of tires? Several of the places I’ve spoken to don’t even have the correct spec to align my car in the event it was off (LCI 550).

Any help is appreciated.

you can always get them shaved prior to shipping. you dont need to replace all 4 tires. I believe tire rack shaves.

Shaved? What does that mean?

so lets say all your tires are 5/32 all around but if you get a new tire it would be 9/32. So you order the tire to the depth you want in order to match the rest of the tires.

Oh ok and then I could safely replace just a single tire I assume?

I bought my Michelins from the dealer. Replaced all 4 and they price matched which brought the cost down a bit.

6 days later I get a flat in the rear drivers tire. Was making a turn where construction was, somehow concrete on the road hit it just right where it cracked the tire.

Dealer warranty covered up to $400, so I had to pay the difference plus for the install (around $80 if I recall). But since it was a custom order, I had to wait about a week.

Luckily I could just keep refilling the run flat to and from work (it would lose about 7lbs in the 15 minute drive, and be at 0lbs by the time I left again). It held me over since I didn’t opt for a spare.
