BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
What a fantastic machine!

Alpina has introduced the all new Alpina D5 S at the 2017 Frankfurt IAA. They claim it to be the fastest series production diesel on the market, with its 3.0L inline 6 cylinder engine featuring three turbos and common rail high-pressure direct injection, producing 382hp (388PS) and 800Nm (590lb-ft) of peak torque available between 1750 and 2650 rpm.

Together with the upgraded 8 speed automatic transmission powering all four wheels, the Alpina D5 S accelerates from 0 to 62mph (100km/h) in 4.4 seconds and 0-124mph in 17 seconds. Top speed is 178mph (286km/h).

Just about perfect!

Only one question, if the D5 RHD has 2 turbos, are they sequential or parallel? I can't find that info anywhere on the internet at all. I'm also curious as to why it has dropped from 257kw in the F10/11 and F30/31/32/33 to 240kw in the G30/31?

Shame that the 3 turbo setup D5 S is too "heavy" for the UK's roads

382hp doesn't seem so special to me even if torque is crazy high

I'm not even referring to that, the article title-or at least the notification-made it seem like it'd be faster than this lol

It's definitely no slouch and diesel torque has its charm...I was expecting over 400hp

If history is any indication, BMW (or Alpina) underrated the engine. Let's wait for dyno charts. I remember the E90 335d had more than the advertised power/torque figures by ~5-10% at the wheels.

I think you all are expecting too much HP from a diesel. With the right gearing, a lot of torque goes a long way.

Aĺpina has a higher v max. It's not limited at 155 mph.
It has more torque, too

I was estimating an underrated rating that was higher lol

Again, not bashing it in anyway it's just funny how they make you click

I think that the numbers are really great! It's a diesel!
Diesel is about torque. Keep in kind the mileage you get from the same tank and you will be thrilled. It is a wonderful machine.
Plus Alpina was always tastefully done.

This is the car US BMW Fans need to petition for. Where the E90 335d wanted to be the un-Diesel Diesel, this car is that and more.

One less turbo = 1 less thing that can go wrong. Also Alpina reworks all the internals of the BMW engines they modify with higher quality components such as Mahle forged pistons etc. They also use their own turbos and oversize all the cooling systems (adding an oil cooler for example).

Below is information from their website about this tri-turbo engine:

6-Cylinder Diesel (D5 S)

The new BMW ALPINA D5 S (S for “Sportdiesel”) has the most powerful diesel drivetrain ever to feature in a BMW ALPINA automobile. The 3.0 litre straight-six cylinder engine with three turbochargers and common rail high-pressure direct injection delivers an impressive output of 285 kW (388 hp) between 4000 and 5000 rpm. A maximum torque of 800 Nm is available between 1750 and 2650 rpm.

The permanent two stage charging system comprising a total of three turbochargers is responsible for a responsive throttle and energetic power build-up while also ensuring maximum power output is achieved. The arrangement consists of two high-pressure stages with variable turbine geometry and one large low-pressure stage.

Power delivery is smooth, effortless, and – for a diesel – unusually dynamic over the entire rpm range. This is in part due to a flow-optimised air intake system with revised air filter housings which reduce pressure losses in the system overall, allowing the engine to breathe and rev freely.

More output requires more cooling. The high performance cooling package of the new BMW ALPINA D5 S is designed for maximum effectiveness. Large volume coolers and optimised coolant hosing allow high throughput rates. An indirect intercooler set-up keeps air intake distances short. A primary air-water cooler located in front of the engine supplies a large volume water-air intercooler. Additionally three external coolers and a transmission oil cooler guarantee thermodynamic stability even under highest loads.

Fuel consumption in the combined cycle measured according to ECE norms is 6.6 l/100 km with CO2 emissions of 174 g/km. The new BMW ALPINA D5 S is homologated according to the latest exhaust emissions standard Euro 6c.

590 lb-ft + 8 gears = monster instant torque and in-gear acceleration (and with 35+ MPG, 100% better gas mileage and range than the M5 for example). HP is only good for VMax and this Alpina has plenty, unless you want a 200 mph machine ;-).
