Pry tool very easy to pop out from dash , pop from one side and then go on other side and it comes out

You need to slowly pry black trim off by pressing these tabs all around

Just don’t pull do it slowly

Right it worked after 10 attempts , loads of swearing scratched my hands few places but it’s fitted and full working

You will have to swap black housing from G30 controls to G11 controls to be able to fit inside dash

See second and third pics trims

You will have to be very careful removing black mess trim not that careful but you know what I mean and fit

If anyone needs help give me shout

Nice! I'm glad you were able to get everything swapped. I have a pre-LCI so the G30 and G11 were identical to the bottom G30 trim pictured.

Hi, I've bought the G11 silver buttoned climate control unit, exactly the same as yours, but haven't yet taken my existing unit out to swap over.

I notice that the clips to hold the unit in differ in the picture of the G30 & G11 versions. The G30 has 4 'posts' on the climate controls, whereas the G11 has 4 steel clips, 2 on the climate control unit, 2 on the radio control unit. Can you confirm the G11 clips fit ok?

Also, I noticed on the pic of the G11 controls where you have removed them from the silver surround that you have also removed the steel clips from the rear. Is this necessary?

I understand I will have to remove the silver surround (and have done so) and replace it with my existing black surround, but I noticed there are 2 small springs in the control units. One is below the right hand climate knob, the other underneath the skip left button. They look as if they are depressed by 'fingers' in the surround. I'm wondering, 1) Does anyone know what these are for, and 2) Does the G30 black surround have the same fingers?!

I am taking pictures of my conversion and will post these to help others when I've finished.

TIA,

fM

Yes you will have move black mess housing from G30 controls to G11 controls as G11 controls have different plugs as the back which won't fit in G30 dash.

Sorry, not sure what you mean?!

It looks like you can unclip the back of the AC control unit, is this what you mean? Unclip the back from both units and swap them over?

EDIT: Just looked at your pics again and see that's what you've done! Thanks!

Smile G11 Touch Climate Control Retrofit to G30 - Photo Guide & Write-Up

Guide to Fitting a G11/G12 AC Control Touch Screen to a 2017 UK G31

Firstly, many thanks to UKF30 in this thread for his help and bravery in forging the way to do this... Also thanks to the others who have tried this as well! I'm standing on the shoulders of giants here...

Giving back to this amazing forum that has helped me a lot over the years with my E85, E92, F31 & now my G31.

This is a guide to fitting a G11 touch screen AC control unit to a G30/G31. A G30/G31 specific touch screen AC control unit is a straightforward 'Plug and Play' replacement, with no coding or additional work required. Why would you want to fit a G11 unit instead of a G30/G31 specific unit? Well, not only are they are a lot cheaper on eBay, but more importantly for me, they have much nicer aluminium buttons.

This is my guide to fitting a silver button G11 climate control unit to a G30/G31, which is fairly straightforward. It is 'Plug and Play' in terms of the unit plugs in and just works. It is not 'Plug and Play' in terms of you need to swap parts from your existing G30's unit in to the G11's unit.

Specifically, the parts you need from your G30 / G31's unit is:

1) The black gloss fascia surround
2) The square rubber wedge from the top of the fascia
3) The rear casing of the CD control unit
4) The rear casing of the climate control unit itself

This is not difficult to do, but it can be fiddly and so may not be for everyone.

Looking at the front of the units, you can see the fascia panels are a different shape; the G11 assembly is also flat, whereas the G30/G31 assembly has a kink in between the units.

Note: The apparent difference in size is entirely due to perspective; this picture was taken at an oblique angle and the G11 unit is in front of the G30/G31 unit.

If you look at the image below, as UKF30 pointed out in his pictures, you can see the different retaining clips for the 2 units, this is why the rear casings need to be swapped over as the G11 units WILL NOT FIT as is.

UKF30 does mention this in his posts above, but I didn't realise a couple of things.... 1) That in this post https://g30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...8&postcount=22 the unit is not fitted, it is just resting in the hole and, 2) that in his last picture of the rear casings of the units, this was actually of the G11 casings after they had been removed...

Step 1

Remove your G30 / G31 climate unit and plug the G11 unit in to check it works, believe me, you won't want to go through all of this to find out the G11 unit is buggered!

Step 2

With the G11 unit on your workbench (or kitchen worktop if your other half is out), start by removing the small ribbon connector that connects the two control units together.

Next you need to remove the CD control unit from the surround. You have to do the CD control unit first as there are tabs on this unit that hold the AC control unit in place.

To remove the CD control unit, I used a small blade screwdriver, the knife on my Leatherman and my thumbnail. There will be times when you will need a knife as a screwdriver will not fit under.

Start gently and methodically lifting the plastic by sliding your thumbnail / knife / screwdriver under where the red arrows are in the image below to release the tabs while applying gentle pressure to the front of the CD control unit. You will have to do several at a time in order to release them. Don't rush as you don't want to break these.

Step 3

When you finally remove the CD control unit, note there is a small spring which will fall out.

This is located in this hole.

And is held in place by a metal pin.

As you can see, there will be another of these arrangements when you remove the AC control unit, so beware! They aren't under much compression, so they won't fly off, but they will fall out of the holes. I'm not sure what they are for, perhaps to ground the aluminium trim?

Step 4

With the CD control unit removed, you need to repeat the same process to remove the AC control unit.

Step 5

Now you need to remove both the CD control unit and the AC control unit from the G30 fascia. The CD control unit has a rectangular rubber pad, presumably to absorb vibrations.

This can be removed by lifting it up and sliding it forwards, although I left it in situ as I wasn't sure if it could be removed.

The G30 units also have the springs, so keep an eye out for them and put them aside.

Step 6

With all 4 units on your workbench, you need to remove the rear casing of each unit. Note that you could use the G30 CD control unit as it is at this step with the G11 AC control unit, but if you do you will have a mix of black and silver buttons.

Removing the rear casing is exactly the same kind of process to Step 2; gently pry the plastic up with a screwdriver / knife / thumbnail and apply pressure with your thumb to separate the rear case from the rest of the assembly.

You may need to insert something in between the rear casing and the side casing, but the way they are manufactured means the only place you can do this where the lugs are, so whatever you use needs to be narrow and will need to go in where indicated below.

If possible, use something like a nylon zip tie, as the circuit boards are flush to the rear and you don't want to scratch or damage anything. Also using a few nylon zip ties will make it much easier and stop the rear snapping back on when you move round to the ones on the side.

Be careful when the backs are finally off as the circuit boards can fall out rather easily, especially the G11 AC control unit board, which is quite heavy.

Step 7

Eventually you will expose the backs of the two CD control units and the two AC control units. That's the hard work finished!

Now it is a case of snapping the rear casings from the G30 units on to the relevant G11 units. Don't get confused and put the G30 rear case back on the G30 control units, otherwise it's back to Step 6! Note the G11 AC control unit has a much bigger processor on the circuit board!

This step is very easy, just remember to feed the ribbon cable from the CD control unit through the rear casing and be careful with the ribbon connector pins, locate these in place first, before snapping them home. The CD control unit has six pins that occupy pins 1-6, pins 7 & 8 are unoccupied.

The AC control unit has 4 pins, locate the rear casing over these before snapping it on.

Step 8

Almost finished! Slide the rubber wedge back in to the top of the fascia surround (if you took it out) and then clip the G11 / G30 hybrid units in to the G30 fascia. Connect the two units together with the little white ribbon cable then head out to the car, and refit the unit!

Step 9

That's it, you're all done! Play with your new AC controls!

Now all of this may have been obvious from the previous posts, but it wasn't to me. I am currently recovering from a nasty case of CVID, so I blame my brain fog on that...

I hope this helps others!

Hahaha! No, thank you for going where no one has gone before!

I have the time on my hands as I'm isolating due to COVID! As for the fancy arrows... I do this for my day job as a university lecturer teaching 3d computer graphics...

Next job, changing all the switchgear out for G11 switchgear...

EDIT: I'm going to go and look at it again! Best £80 I spent!

Apologize if it's been noted, if you have both heated and ventilated seats the G11 unit will display both in the capacitive button section automatically without coding?
