Auto Stop/Start problems

Does anyone else have an overly aggressive Auto Stop/Start system? Mine will kill the engine while the car is still rolling up to 3MPH. This is extremely frustrating when trying to creep into a parking spot. As the engine dies, the car lurches to a stop as there is no more engine torque pushing it forward. Natural inclination is to release brake making the engine fire right back up causing the car to lurch forward because there is no longer enough brake force to restrain it. Obviously, pulling the gear selector over to S or pressing the defeat button will prevent this ugliness but that is a big ask of anyone else driving the car like my wife.

Complained several times and finally the dealer opened a TSARA case. They checked the onboard FASTA data and found nothing but they still authorized reprogramming with newer software. Still no change in operation. The dealer then used ISTA to calibrate all DSC sensors and throttle bodies.

They claim victory but I am not convinced there is any improvement. The only real noticeable change is that the engine lost its roar on startup. It sounds like an anemic 4 cylinder instead of a performance V8 when you press the start button. That helps the lurch forward a little but nothing else.

Get the Bimmercode App and a OBD2 controller and disable that crap. It is SO annoying.

Yeh it just works that way. Disable it if you don't like it

A tip for “creeping forward slowly into a parking space” without the engine turning off…is to just pop the gear shift lever over into the M/S gate. If you don’ t move the lever forward or rearward…it stays in sport mode…so this automatically cancels the ASS feature.

FYI…until you can code ASS off…you can do the above anytime ASS kicks in when you really don’t want the car to shut off. And if the engine has shut off…it should restart when you move the gear lever over into the M/S gate. You won’t have to press the START button.

And if you don't want to drive around in SPORT mode…all you have to do is pop the gear shift lever back over into “D” after taking off.

Going to an aftermarket coding tool is my only option at this point but I was told that the ability to defeat it was no longer there in MY2020+. Or, is this just using the factory coding?

BTW, I understand that I can push the defeat button or pull the gear lever into M/S but that is not reasonable to ask of others driving the car.

IF I do go the Bimmercode route, does the OBDII adapter need to remain plugged into the port?

No. I asked the same thing. It does not.

Also, Bimmercode doesn't technically disable it. It sets it to start in the last setting, instead of defaulting to "on" at every restart. So you use Bimmercode to "remember last setting" and you hit the button to turn it off and then it stays that way until you engage it again.

Thanks. I was told that the ability to remember last setting was not available after 7/17. For the price, I guess it is worth a shot.

What this document refers to is the ability for the dealer to set remember last setting for customers who complain they do not like Auto S.S. I believe due to EPA (or another regulatory agency) they had to discontinue this at the dealer level.

The ability to code this feature using Bimmercode still exists.

Probably don't get the benefit of the efficiency ratings if they allow it to be turned off by the dealer/manufacturer. I'm a little surprised they even put the button there for the driver to make the election. But glad they do.

There's no need to guess or wonder what the Bimnmercode app allows you to do to your car. It is all listed alphabetically on their website.

Click this link for the BMW G30 5 series...and if you click on the tabs, it opens and gives a brief detail along with the module the coding is found. There are TWO coding options for Auto Start Stop (on/off or remember last setting): https://www.bimmercode.app/cars/g30/

I used Bimmercode to set the start up driving mode to Sport Individual, which I like set with my preferances, and which also automatically disables the Auto Start/Stop feature. --Bob

Good luck. If you have any qualms about coding…there are a lot of great videos on youtube that will walk you through the Bimmercode app and you can see how simple it is when you follow the correct procedures.

Just want to come back and thank everyone for the programing advice. Got an OBD-LinkCX and the Bimmercode app. While my apprehension level was still high going in (and the brief error message about going into reduced power/limp mode didn't help), it took less than 10 minutes to enable ASR Memory function.

So sad that the dealers are unwilling to do this simple request. Thank God for this forum and the aftermarket.

You haven't given much info to be helpful...other than throwing out suggestions that you may have already tried...but the 1st question that comes to mind is...are you in Eco Pro mode? If yes, then ASS usually will still kick in...at least it does on my f06 & f15. ASS (auto start/stop) still activates in ECO-Pro mode...but can be coded off in the other modes (comfort+/comfort/sport/sport+).

What software or application are you using? Info below is from the Bimmercode.app website...note that it specifically states that it won't work in Eco Pro mode.

I use esys for coding. and yes i use eco individual on start.i´ve recognized on my car that comfort+sport has the "memory" active. Any chance to deactivate msa on eco? i´ve coded the checkbox in the NBT but i cannot deactivate it - Always keep active

I´ve also searched other ECU´s for MSA settings but these settings are useless.

If you are driving in Eco Individual mode but you don't want the engine to shut off when you come to a stop...just move your gear shift lever over into the M/S gate as you slow down just prior to coming to a stop. Then when you take off...pop the gear shift lever back into "D". I think any version of sport mode or mapping cancels the auto-start/stop feature.

You don't have to use the manual shifting feature when you move the shift lever into the M/S gate...if you pop it to the left...and DON'T move the gear shift lever fore or aft...then the car is in a drive-line only sport mode (engine & tranny).
