Yup that's the Audi way which I think is more distracting, so for Nav you actually have to glance down?

The current generation is full digital just not the iDrive 7 kind, doubt BMW will do Tesla kind of upgrade for older car... (wouldn't be surprised if hardware isn't quite there either, like certain iPhone can only be update to iOS whenever even if they try to make it backward compatible)

I would prefer if they can enhance even some more on the HUD, I really like HUD, which is probably why I use BMW built in Nav more often than the CarPlay google map (you loose the arrow direction on HUD when use google map)

Cars don't have the same constraints that a smart phone does in terms of hardware. iPhones have physical constraints because of how small they are, and how they cram everything into a very small space. No such issue with a car. They'll be able to swap digital graphics in and out pretty easily going forward. We already get navigation updates real time as it is. I could see the updates becoming more broad and more frequent going forward.

you're assuming chip and what not is all the same, is the new BMW "AI" computed on board or over internet? The processor might not be fast enough (though I suppose they can do partial solution, like display what not all update to iDrive 7 but voice control what not is not)

IDrvie 7 requires a bigger display. I believe it's a 12.3" display instead of the 10" display. You can see them on the new X5's and the soon to be released X7's when they come out in March. I doubt we will see a retrofit kit or software upgrade for that, but I hope BMW does release an upgrade path. The new digital assistant looks cool AF. "Hey, BMW. I'm cold" and will turn on the heater.

Replacing a chip doesn't require a completely new model. Same goes for the display in the dash. That can be done in an LCI.

I feel like I've seen 2019s with the plastic rings on models WITHOUT the "full dynamic digital cluster". These are the plastic pieces on top of the screen that show hashes and numbers for the speedo/tach/fuel/temp.

OTOH, for G30s with the full digital cluster option, what they did remove late 2018 was the thin metal rings that outlined the speedo/tach, resulting in the dash that VirtualGuitars posted.

But it seems you can still get a G30 build without the full digital cluster, in which case you still have the plastic rings.
