Hi all,

Test drove a 2018 M550i with 58k miles and noticed some metal clanking noise when coasting and then going 10-20% on throttle.

I don’t believe it makes any noise if I go heavy or WOT on throttle.

Could this possibly be wastegate noise or something else? Thanks.

It’s definitely not engine knock btw. It’s more like a little bit of metallic rattling or clanking. Its not super loud. I noticed it when driving with windows down.

The last time I heard that (on my F30) under the very same conditions, it was the wastegate.

Wastegates/turbos do occasionally go bad on the N63 at lower mileage. If it is under CPO warranty, have the dealership check it out.

Thanks, its not CPO. Car is from Carmax. It has a 90 day near bumper to bumper warranty and I would be buying their 5 year extended warranty if I pull the trigger on this car. This is the only “issue” I could tell.

If it’s wastegate rattle do you know if its one of those things dealers will say its normal noise or actually replace them even if no codes or other issues are present. This would be my 6th BMW and I’m very well aware of some cars even brand new that make a similar noise and other ones that don’t. Guess they never cleaned up the wastegate issues. Lol.

Wastegate rattle is sooner or later associated with a boost leak which results in codes that should show up in a scan. The saving grace since about 2014 or so is that the wastegate can be replaced as a standalone part, unlike on my early build F30 where the entire turbo had to be replaced because it was all one unit.

A PPI from an independent BMW mechanic will clarify this.
