2017 530i door locking

If I take my car to the car wash and the keys are in the car and in neutral, will doors automatically lock?

Are you inside the car or outside of the car as it goes through the wash process?

The auto lock feature is tied to the vehicle being in “D” and moving at a specific mph...if you are going through an auto-Carwash (inside the car) and the car is in neutral...you’ve not met at two of the criteria...in D and moving at 3 MPH.

If you are outside of the car

Why leave the keys in the car?

Don't understand?

If it's to do with mirrors folding just turn this off in iDrive.

Some are coded from factory to fold mirrors on normal lock button without holding down the lock button on the fob

But

on my own car at least this is linked to the driver profile and can be selected on or off in vehicle setting on idrive and that key won't or will fold mirrors.

Can't figure out apart from this why someone would want to leave the keys in during an automatic car wash.🤔

Car washes around here, the wash is automatic, but at the end they drive your car to dry and finish the inside by the door. So you need to leave your keys in the car.

Thanks for giving us a scenario that we can wrap our imagination around.

Since we are all still guessing & “throwing darts at the board” (since the OP never came back to clarify the “why”)...if the remote is inside the car...99.9% of the time the car won’t lock when it senses the remote inside the car.

To the OP...why not just recreate this scenario that has you worried to see if you can lock the remote key inside the car. You can test this by rolling your windows down, leaving one of your remotes inside the car with the transmission in P and/or in N (with the parking brake applied when in neutral)...then try to lock the vehicle with your other remote or using the comfort access door handles.

Report back your findings.

Another solution is get the BMW connected app on your phone so if it does lock you can always send an unlock request to the car via the app.

Takes about 15 seconds to reach the car via the on board sim and servers but it works.

Handy backup. Here in Europe this if free of charge with the app no subscription required.

EXCELLENT suggestion. I was just looking at this the other day since the 3G sunset is an oft discussed topic on the F-chassis forums that came with 3G service. I was just looking at my Connected services to see what was still doable (soon to be gone) features. And yes indeed, lock/unlock is accessible if you don’t lock your phone inside the car.

So to the OP (hope you’re still out there reading the reply’s you got)...you really don’t have an issue...the remotes are designed (in most cases) to not be locked inside the vehicle...and if you did happen upon the odd scenario where it did...if you have your phone and you have a BMW Connected account (the remote services are free)...even if the doors did lock with the remote inside the car...all you need to do is go into the app and unlock the vehicle.

According to the manual you can't lock the car when it is in N from the outside...

I also don't know if the instructions for N are unique to the PHEV or not, but I still find the whole thing a bit confusing and not well documented. But this is the process I follow from the manual when going through an automatic wash.
