Sounds like you missed this change in naming that happened a few years back. 5GT was renamed 6 and the rest of the 6 was eliminated (replaces by 8 series)

For those of you that have never heard of Skoda, is one of the oldest automakers in the world. Started in the Czech Republic back in 1895 by Václav Laurin and Václav Klement. It became part of the Volkswagen group in 1998. Skoda had plans to enter the US market back in 2017 but they were scrapped indefinitely to pursue other "emerging and more profitable" markets. I have seen new Skodas in Europe and I would say they are more attractive than comparable VW branded vehicles. The Octavia and Superb are pretty decent looking cars and some would say quality as good or better than German VDubs.

The 3 series had them for 1,5 generation, the 5 series for 2 generations I think? They certainly were signature for a decade, but it's not like BMW introduced them in the 50s.

Seeing this in my rear view mirror will not be like "oh, new bmw 5 series", will be more like "another fool with a skoda wants to race".
A shame bmw has no identity anymore, all the G family might as well have a VW badge on it, they are turning into it anyways, fwd cars, plain design, mini-vans.

My current x5 g05 45e is better in many ways. Electric drive is nice for relaxed drives. Six cylinder petrol has a nice sound than the diesel. Turning circle and cornering is better with integral active steering. Only thing the 6 GT did better was the comfort on bumpy roads and the trunk was huge. |

I have now seen the official release information. I do not see anything that makes me want another 5 series.
As a point of interest, it says the 540 is getting a 48 volt system similar to what Audi and M-B are using as a slight boost to offset any turbo lag. That is an answer to a question I have never had about my 540. I plan to replace my 540 before warranty runs out in about a year from now. The only way I could see getting another one is if I got a M550, and I don't want to spend that much money. I don't need eight years of the same car. Just not something that excites me.

I don't mind the new headlights but they don't look unique. The blacked out eyebrows work, but the DRL shape is now too similar to other brands.
Interesting bit in this article is that it look like the 540i will get dropped replaced with the M550 (for our RHD market at least) M550 is tempting, but costs are a big factor. Traffic is so bad that I can't even stretch the legs on the 540, yet alone anything quicker. |
