Ambient lighting not working on dashboard
Basically what the title says. I got the car yesterday and it worked fine, but tonight when it got darker outside I noticed the ambient lighting on the dashboard, like under the screen was not on. Not sure if I enabled some setting that turned them off or not, but all the side ones on the doors work perfectly fine. Just the lights on the front dash are off. Anyone know how I might be able to fix this or what the problem could be? I’ve attached some images for reference along with what it *should* look like (the picture with orange lights)

Has happened a few times in the forum. The dealership will replace the lights. A 2020+ should still be under warranty.

Yup, mine were fading out on the passenger side so had them replaced under warranty. Multiple incidences of this on the forums. I think this and the active grill shutters not working are becoming known issues with the newer BMWs.

My 2018 had them replaced just before the warranty went out. Same with the steering column. Both common issues, it seems. I just reset my warranty clock for another two years when I got the 2020. Will be looking for the same issues. The steering column on my 2021 X7 is obviously wanting to get stuck as well. Will address it at the next service.

Just getting stuck, not adjusting or moving when the car turns on and off. And then when I’d manually use the controls to move it into position, it would still be stuck or usually just move a little at a time. So it required clicking the little adjuster tab multiple times to move it all the way down.
With the 540, it just started doing that one day. With the X7, it’s making noise as if it wants to get stuck, like something is impeding upon it. There is a bulletin on it, I believe. And a protocol. First they will lubricate some part in there. That worked on the 540 temporarily. But a couple or few months later it started again. At that point, they just replaced the whole column. Perhaps because the symptom seems different on the X7, the lubrication will work better. If this is something you’re noticing, take it in before the warranty ends. Get it on the record. If you did, given it’s a known issue, you might be able to make a warranty case if the warranty expires after they lubricate it and then it happens again within a few months.

I usually drive with windows up, but the other day I was driving with windows down, and turned the wheels all the way to the right pulling into a parking spot and I heard a scraping sound. Tested all the way to the left and heard the same noise. Was wondering if that had anything to do with the steering column issue (steering's very smooth otherwise) or if it is wheel bearings or something benign...maybe debris I picked up during the roadtrip. I am going to see if it reproduces consistently and bring it up during the next oil change. Still have 6 months of original warranty left.

I had this issue twice with Ambient Lighting on the dash and the right front passenger door. Both times resolved under warranty. Just noticed the right side of the dash showing the same signs and now the right rear door. Scheduling an appointment this week to get it resolved again!
My LED panel wasn't damaged but there was condensation that affected the sensors causing localized dimming in specific areas of the strip. |
