2017 540 vs 2020 540 brakes
Good afternoon all, I am curious on input.
My buddy has a 2017 540i sport line. I have a 2020 540i m sport line. It seems as if our brakes and rotors are different. My brake calipers and rotors look bigger than his. My cars buildsheet does not have the optional m sport brakes on it for the $645 or $695 that it costed from the factory. Is this just a matter of msport brakes vs sport line brakes or is there a different reason? P.S. dealer had wheels refurbished and forgot to put the m stickers back on. I have some coming in for those cringing. |

There are two sizes for 5 series. 348 and 374.
Your friend have 348 brakes and yours is 374. The option you mentioned for M sport brakes is basically for them to paint your caliper red or blue. |

Not sure if there is a significant difference in the rear. I have a 540 with M-Sport brakes, and they are the same as the M550i setup. |

Correct on the 4 piston, that is why I pointed out 348 and 374. That’s the size of the caliper. The option that OP mentioned for $645 or $695 though is just a paint option. He have the 374 caliper. It’s just bare aluminum and not painted. I sell these all the time so I know. You can even fit large 395 ones from M850i into your car and directly bolt on.

The silver brakes in the photo do not look the same. Rears are TRW. |

OP have 4 piston caliper made by brembo, just not painted blue or red. You can check my previous sales. I have sold several in bare aluminum before. Also sold in blue and black. You can scroll down to see buyers that posted what they got from me. https://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1955615 |

A question about upgrading from Continental (bare aluminum) caliper to the larger Brembo (red or blus) caliper: can one bolt on the larger caliper without changing the vehicle's steering knuckle?
Of course a larger rotor will be needed, but that should not be a problem. |
