M550i Performance Center Delivery
Just a quick note and pics on my M550i delivery yesterday.
More pics to come when I can do a better photo session. PCD is an enjoyable day. You get the 1 night hotel stay, dinner, and breakfast. The day starts promptly at 8am. You get ~ 30 minutes of classroom, and then go out to cars like you purchased and folks are broken into groups if needed. First was skid pad DSC training in a 340i. A very brief intro to show DSC prevents slids and spins but can't do anything beyond the tires max adhesion. Next up was ABS braking. Slam on the brakes, stay on them, look ahead and steer where you want to go. Next up was a nice autocross, small track course, we lapped. My friend and I kept catching the X4s in our group. Next up was X4s off road and a factory tour. Then the reveal of the car and a lot of discussion of its features. I then had a 90 mile cruise home. I made sure to vary the speed but did play with active cruise. More first impressions later too. PS: I asked Matt Mullins (who drove the fuel car in the world record drift) if you can drift an M550i. He went out and tested that. Basically, you can kick a tail out but X Drive fights you to regain stability and you'll loose. Possibly resulting in a big spin if you really try too hard.

Congrats on the PCD delivery. I wish I could have done that. It would have been a fun experience, tough to do with an 8 month old at home however haha.
That combo of of mediterranean blue/ mocha nappa interior looks stunning. Are you adhering to the 1200 mi break in period/keeping it under 4500 rpm? I've heard conflicting recommendations.

I'll try to stay under 4500 RPMs but will be hard to do with a mountain drive with friends coming up. Plus its about 1/2 sec between 4k & 5k RPMs, even at part throttle in the lower gears.

Nice. I canceled my PCD because I had to wait until April 4 even though the car arrived on February 25.
That’s a nice car and beautiful interior. Enjoy it and write a review soon.

Nice and congratulations! I just drove over the mountains on I40 yesterday. I would have had some fun but the roads were wet with falling snow. Maybe we can meet up at the Dragon one day.

Here are a few pics from the Performance Center. Note the skid pad was a 340i, other exercises an M550i, and the hot laps were in an M3. All Alpine White! They had the world record drift M5 there. The off road exercises were in new X3s.

Second impressions and a few more pics of my M550i. Especially of the mocha interior. I'll do a full post in the pics threads.
Likes: Active cruise works well even in traffic. I'm still not used to lane keeping and don't trust it thru construction zones. The downside is making sure you remember YOU are in control when they're not active. The performance and handling are excellent and near enough to F10 M5 levels I won't miss it. The ride is very good but the RFTs still thud over recessed man hole covers. Several dislikes but some are just having to get used to such as them going back to standard turn signals. Or going to a clockwise zoom on the nav. That's more correct but just different... So far the biggest ergonomic miss is the narrow opening to the door pocket, my wrist barely snakes thru to reach something in the bottom of it. Also the console cup holders are smaller. But there's now the door pocket for bigger water bottles.

That’s just spectacular. Enjoy it.
Yes, I agree with the turn signals. They should have just kept the F10 style. Knowing BMW, it was probably a cost saving move rather than customer satisfaction. |
