Hood Support (Struts)

Just curious if anyone on the boards had to replace theirs yet. Looks like mine reached end of life, ordering new set from FCP. Kinda strange that they failed so soon on my 2018.

Just to confirm, I have not hit anything or anyone head on… to the best of my knowledge.

How many miles ?
That does seem very early for a failure based on year.

I know BMW changed the way the hood opens on 2020's and up to where you just pull the hood latch 2x and its open. No longer requires finding the release in the grill. They may have upgraded the struts also, but i'm not sure.

That’s how it is on my 2018 as well. Pull 2x and lift.

Was like that on my 2017 F31 as well, never had an issue with struts on that in 4 years & 72k miles, sure my 2014 F31 was the same with no issues but can't quite remember, if it was exactly the same.

In saying that I've seen pictures of G 5's that have had front impact and it looks as if the struts have pushed the bonnet up by the screen, never seen this on a 3er so maybe they have a shelf life related to the pedestrian safety sytems?

The bonnet struts have a five year life span, according to BMW. I spoke with my service advisor about replacing mine & was told “of the record” that it’s not critical to change them.

It’s to do with pedestrian safety, in the event that you should hit a pedestrian & they land on the bonnet the struts lift the bonnet in order to lessen injury

Just read about the 5year life. Good to know, it’s annoying not being able to prop the hood up so have to use my FCP credit lol

Have yours actually failed then & no longer support the bonnet?
