Hi. My Emergency call system has malfunctioned & I followed via utube video how to pull the dead battery out of the headliner & put in a new one. But I still have the fault & I reset the idrive system but still have the error.

My dealer told me that after the batter is swapped for a new one they need to do some software upgrading/fixing to the tune of $420.00. Seems like bs to me. Anybody had this issue or knows what I can do to get rid of the error? I dont need the stupid emergency system, but the error on my screen prevents me from turning on my steering wheel heater, and it's always on the screen.

I have a 2019 m550.

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

This has been covered in multiple threads on these boards. It could be a few things that will throw the error. Most common is a dead battery or damaged TCU via water etc. I just swapped mine because my original module was water damaged after having the roof wrapped. I suggest resetting codes and driving around for a bit, you can also pull the negative terminal and wait. If error comes back then you can pull fault codes and see what you get.

Or if you want pull fault codes in memory now and see what code was thrown.

Did you clear the codes? I replaced my battery a few months and continued to get the message in the cluster until I cleared the codes. It has not come back since.

Exactly, if it’s the backup battery then your code will say it. If it shows something specific to a communication issue, like general mobile network error or microphone short circuit to ground, then it’s a TCU issue.

I have no idea how to see or find fault codes.
All I get is the message below my odometer, and on idrive that there is a malfunction of the system. Swapping out the new battery didnt fix that but my dealer says I need to do a software update so the car knows a new battery was inserted in the roof rear headliner. Is there another way to fix this, perhaps unplugging something? I dont care if the ECS doesnt work, but with the error message on the screen constantly, I cant for example turn on my steering wheel heater because thats where it would normally say I've activated or deactivated the heater & it wont come up.

You can clear codes using BimmerLink (https://www.bimmerlink.app/) running on your phone. You'll also need an OBD adapter to connect to the car. There are details on the adapters on the BimmerLink site.

BimmerLink will (should) clear that code for you. On mine it was just a case of swapping the battery then clearing the code. I’m using a Vlink Bluetooth adapter but I kno some people have more advanced adapters.
