Is a high mileage 2018 M550i a good buy?
I’m considering purchasing a 2018 M550i x drive with 85k miles. It’s priced pretty well at around ~$22k but the high mileage is making me a little worrisome. Are there any common problems I should be expecting with this kind of mileage / as it reached 100k+ miles? Please let me know your thoughts, and feel free to mention any other suggestions within a ~$25k budget.
Thanks! |

Coolant loses seem to be quite common, just look through the threads here.
I guess it depends how long you intend to keep and if you can get a good warranty for peace of mind Engine seems to be holding up well although I suspect the tu3 version in the 2020 model year and later is better still It’s service and maintenance history I’d say is ketch here Clues as to whether it’s not been looked after at no expense would be things like cheap tyres on it (not matching even), kerbed wheels suggest not cared for. |

Agreed that look at how it has been cared for is important. Also if I was you id ask myself if I can easily handle a 5k repair if it came up. If so not a big issue. If that concerns you id recommend you look at a different vehicle as its not realistically in your price range at that point. Good example is just replacing tires can easily be in the 2k range and at least in my configuration they are directional and staggered so no tire rotations to make them last longer.

The B58 is a safer bet based on its history. That price doesn't seem bad though. |

There's a reason that the car is priced so cheaply.
Remember, this was an $80K car new, and it's priced like that to maintain it. As mentioned above, tires, repairs, etc. will be expensive. Very expensive. BMWs are great cars, but they can become real money pits when they get over 100K miles, especially the V8 cars. You will be better off with a six cylinder version, or if you have a tight budget, a Honda would be a safer bet.
