Tragedy at the VLN opening race today at Nurburgring
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Quote:
Guys, for those that haven't heard yet, there was a tragedy at the first VLN race held today at the Nordschleife. The race was red flagged and will not be restarted at all. A Nissan GTR driver went airborne at Flugplatz and directly impacted the safety tires and primary fencing and landing on the other side of it. Sadly, a spectator died and about 4 were injured. News of the accident is all over german news and the internet right now. http://www.motorsport.com/vln/news/s...g-vln-accident *****EDIT***** Here is a better angle as to where the GTR went airborne. You will notice the slight double "hump" on the track as the second car passes. The GTR goes airborne on the 1st one. *****2nd EDIT***** Reported today via Motorsport.com, the German Motorsport Federation, DSMB, has banned all GT3 cars in the SP7 through SP10 and SP-X class from the Nurburgring until further notice. This has thrown into question the upcoming Nurburgring 24 hour race scheduled for the weekend of 14-17 May and also the upcoming VLN series races. The federation wants to analyze what happened in order to implement measures to make sure that it does not happen again. http://www.motorsport.com/vln/news/g...fatal-accident

I thought that flat bottom cars were banned ages ago to avoid this issues.
RIP to the family of the victim!

Tragic. One of the reasons i never go to air shows or race tracks like that. While exciting to be so close to the action. Unfortunately these things can happen, thank god not to often. Sad day all around.

I read on another site the fatality was an American tourist. Terrible no matter what their nationality. Feel awful for the driver as well, no fault of his it would appear.
I wonder what was different about this lap, suspension unloads cresting the hill and lifts a little, front downforce is greatly dimished when the splitter isn't close to the ground, high pressure builds underneath and over it goes. But surely the anticipated this could happen at this location. He wasn't drafting anyone. Then you have this sort of thing...

Be interesting to see what caused the car to take off.. Too much reliance on down pressure?
Reminds me of Senna's accident.. |
