Side skirt extension install question

Hi. I am interested in adding the side skirt extension to a 2020 540xi. I saw these are installed with rivets and self-tapping screws? Does anyone know if the self-tapping screws are just drilling into the oem polyurethane side skirts, or if it is drilling into metal parts? I live in Canada, and drilling into metal parts would not be something I would want to do. Also, I've read the aftermarket side skirt extensions have good fitment and that they are a viable option (is this truly the case)? Thank you for your help.

I have looked into this several times. It is my understanding that you would just be tapping into the plastic underside already there.

Correct. I asked a local shop and they confirmed it would only tap into the polyurethane OEM side skirts.

As already said, they will be connected to the PU side skirts, not to any metal structures.

There is a 2-3 inch surface area on the side skirt that will sit under the rocker panel. You will drill up into that directly into the underside of the rocker panel.

As long as the screws are under a half-inch, they will not reach the body while still being able to tap through the rocker panel.

Anyone got any insight and recs on ebay side skirts... fitment/install/quality? Dont think the expensive as heck brands are worth it as mods don't increase the value of the car per my service advisor and service manager.

I can't speak for other manufacturers, but I would recommend using the original part. I thought for a long time whether I should buy the carbon side skirts or the normal version. In the end I decided on the normal version and had it painted in high-gloss black. Today the side skirts were installed together with the front spoiler. Unfortunately it was already dark outside and I couldn't take any good photos, but it should be enough for an illustration.

I think with original parts a car always looks more high-quality and the fit is great. And to be honest, the original side skirts from BMW are really affordable.

Very nice and I agree on fit and value of the BMW side skirts. Are these the ///M performance ones? Looks great, especially on a white car.

Yes, I installed the original BMW M Performance side skirts with the following article numbers: 51192455950 & 51192455951

Can fully recommend them, because the carbon fiber side skirts are too expensive in my opinion...

I've read for the side skirts, the aftermarket copy has good fitment. I'll see if this is true in spring.

Same, but for $400 bucks, I would rather have an OEM part on the car.

Love how those look, I have been seriously contemplating buying these for a couple weeks now.

Reached out to my service advisor and he said $500 to paint and $500 to install…

~$1500 for parts/paint/install is not worth for side skirts.

What did you approx end up spending?

In my opinion, the offer is far too expensive... I bought the parts during Black Week and paid almost 250€ for both of them together (unpainted). A paint shop then painted both side skirt extensions together in high-gloss black for 90€. The installation this week (not at a BMW dealer) costed me another 370€ (along with the front spoiler, mind you).

In total I paid 710€, which is about $765.

But first I also asked BMW for an estimate and would have paid about twice as much.

I would recommend you to buy the parts online, then take them to a good painter, and then have the parts installed in a workshop that is not part of BMW

I was faced with the same decision as you and am glad I ultimately bought the parts.

After seeing your pics, I pulled the trigger on OEM. Dealer gave me a discount so I said screw it I'll get them. Thinking about wrapping them in gloss black then PPF'ing them myself instead of painting (way more costly). I'll prob DIY the install too.

Thank you for your help
