Quitting a job to sell cars?!

Quit a professional job to become a car salesman because of my love for cars and the need to walk away from corporate politics?

why don't you try to get into BMW corporate (SC, or so) instead of slaving for the dealership owner for some change...
If you love it so much to quit the job you went to college for, then relocating should be a breeze...

Im sorry to say bro, but when your selling cars and need to make a careera out of it, the last thing the job involves is the product. I sell cars and at the beginning its cool to be around them but when you need to make money, and when 99.9% of people dont care about cars it really takes the fun and excitment out of it. Gross and units are priority, not gawking at the cars all day. I personally love the job but let me put it this way. I can spend 12 hours at the dealer and come home and browse this site for 2 hrs and the reason why is becuase while Im at the dealer Im not really doing anything that has to do with cars. Just trying to work deals and move units. Hope this helps with your decision.

Hate to break it to you but politics exist anywhere and everywhere, including car dealerships.

+1

I'm assuming you're in a salaried position right now - do you want to throw that away for a comission position?

Most important, can you do sales? Some people just can't hack it.

depends on what it is that you do now...would you be taking a big pay cut. Are you willing to work 12 hour days and weekends. Can you deal with haggling back and forth with a guy for 3 days thinking you are about to close a deal only to have the prospect not take your calls because he is afriad to tell you he got a great deal on a lexus.

not too mentionion 60% of your co-workers will not share your passion for bmw's and 90% of your clients will not either....I mean I suppose it would be alot of fun if every client was a e90post.com enthusiast. But the majority of your clients will not care about the history of BMW's appreciate their quirkiness and truly understand what is behind the roundel.

If you think you can become a supersalesman...because that is what you will be forget the fact that you are selling BMW's because it is truly irrelevant. You will be a salesman and as such you will put in a ton of hours to close deals and work around your clients schedule for deliveries etc. Not that there is anything wrong with being a salesman..I am one..I am a financial advisor/stockbroker (salesman). Very rewarding when you work hard and keep closing deals...but you can't forget your abc's "Alway's Be Closing".

Let us know how you decide.

Yes I am salaried, and I work in the financial sector.

Politics, yes, they exist everywhere. But corporate politics seems to be the worst form of BS I've ever been exposed to.

The meetings, the bosses, just the culture in general makes me sick. I almost stood up a few days ago during a mandatory "brainwashing" session to tell everyone to STFU and snap the F out of it...just ranting fellas. I suppose the grass always seems greener on the other side.

I need to find something that I can self-employ myself in. Any ideas?!! ARGHHHHHH

There's this really good article on Edmunds about this journalist who went undercover to become a car salesmen for a few months. I'd look it up for you, but I'm too lazy. It's a really good read.

I actually read that a few weeks ago. Maybe it's wishiful thinking, but perhaps that was a one off experience? Or is that how cut-throat the auto industry is? I need more then a paycheck, and that's probably my problemo right now...job dissatisfaction.

No, it would suck because they would all want the car at invoice and floor mats thrown in. Because all of these people expect you to work for free and not make any money.

I think if you become an Internet or Fleet manager, it wont be too bad. You will make quiet a lot of money. However, if you're working the floor, seling cars is one of the most difficult things to do. You would have to be there pretty much from opening to closing time because that's the only way to make sure you cover all the bases since many real potential buyers only come at a certain time of the day.

When I first started selling cars I too did have a passion for them. It was just fun and you get to be around cars all day. THen when it was slow and the customers were giving you headaches, that passion went away pretty quick. Most people I worked with were only there because they had too (e.g. laid off, cant do anything else, etc). Unless you're really, really, really good at it, you cant really make a career out of car selling.

Do ya know quiting your job can be one of the most difficult decisions.

Let me tell you my experience.

I was a partner, earning good money, but hating how the other partners worked. I felt stifled as time went on. There came a time when even hearing the sound of their stuck-up voices would make me cring.

Oh, the politics of corporate life!!!!

Anyways( I'm trying my best American accent, no offence) I decide enough was enough. I made my intentions clear and the other partners bought me out. Scary times, I really had taken the plunge!

It turned out to be the best decision I have ever made. To start off with I was working all the hours God sent me, but things are much more manageable now that I am established. I am now truly my own boss, earning more than what I was earning before, and most importantly happy.

I see where you're coming from when you say you want to go self-employed. I have to say although my step was a drastic one, I stuck to the work I knew and it paid off. Going into car sales from a professional background is brave if not reckless. I can see the attraction of working with cars, but work is work, it all comes with some s...t.

Sometimes you gotta do things you don't like so that you can then do things that you do!!!

I hope this helps.

How about working in the internet department? Meaning the majority of your clientele would be somewhat pre-screened and pre-arranged? Do they receive the same BS as normal floor salesman? How's internet sales these days?

That's pretty risky. Do you like to take risks? Have you gotten on the wrong side of a risk before? Do you have dependents? If the cars sales thing didn't work out at all, say that in 2 months you are gone, then what do you do? Is there a good contingency plan? What would it look like on your resume?

I wouldn't recommend it unless you are ready to just quit anyway regardless of the outcome.

I have never sold cars, but I was a salesman. Most of my working life has been selling. I made more money than I do now. But it can be cutthroat. I would think that in car sales it is worse this way than most.

Say that you work your scheduled hours. You have to have a life, right? You're already working some weekends and evenings, you don't want to work them all. Some of your be-backs come in while you are out. Some floor-whore sells to them. Can you stick it out if this is a regular thing? And can you dish it out as well as you can take it?

I guess this gets to your question about selling your soul. Do you grin and bare it (bend over, please) yet keep your ethics and not steal sales? Then, you don't keep up in your sales and income. You accept the criticism.

Do you love the environment so much, that just being there is reward in itself? Are you resolved that there is just nothing better you can do for a living?

This is really coming across a little depressing. But some sales gigs are like that.

I didn't vote in your poll because the assumption is that you will make more money than you do now. That could be way off base. Maybe No should read: "No, you will sell your soul for the chance to bring in more money."

Are there any comments from the car salemen out there to confirm or deny any of this?
