A couple of issues related to the M Performance Brakes I have observed so far: (1) There seems to be a bit more pad dust on the wheels now, compared to the "blue" brake pads. The BMW shop foreman told me that both brake systems used the same pad, so I do not quite understand what's going on with that. (2) Oh yes, some (dry) brake squeal is present, perhaps lasting 2 seconds just before the vehicle comes to a full stop, with gentle brake application. When I had the "blue" brakes on the car, they were absolutely silent. |

Any one know, what drilled or slotted rotors can you put with the blue m performance brakes? I have the msport brakes for the g30 and want to change the rotors

Funny you ask, I just upgraded my brakes
In my opinion, the drilled discs was a necessary upgrade to the brakes once I put the new wheels on. I included a similar angled photo with and without the cross drilled for a direct comparison. As far as the conversation with the blue calipers, I purchased my 2018 M550 in late November of last year and they already had the brakes. I was specifically looking for one with them. I think with the black barrels and wheels your eye goes right to blue brakes which makes them pop which I love. I ceramic coated the wheels and brakes, and am running low dust pads. Yes, I am in the infatuation stage still, and enjoy taking photos of the car- it should go away soon I'm sure

They look so much better with cross drilled rotors! I recently retrofitted the F90 M5 brakes on my G30 and they look 1000x better than the M Sport brakes I had before. A good chunk of that is the much larger cross drilled rotors and six piston front Brembo calipers, but also I love the way the front caliper is slightly angled giving it that supercar look
I'll have to post some pics when I get a chance to take some pictures of the car when it's not covered in pollen!

Reviving this older thread as I just ordered the reds for my 2018 540d. Will post before and after pics once I install them and let you guys know if I can tell a difference in stopping power or not. I'll be honest. If I feel like I wasted my money or it could've been better spent elsewhere (see other mods...like coilovers), I'll tell you.

Relative to the F10, even the standard Continental/ATE fixed calipers on the G30 are an improvement. Moving up to the optional blue and red Brembos (that are part of the M packages) offer even better performance, but mostly due to larger diameter rotors. Porsche seemed to caught on to the attraction of brightly-painted calipers years ago and BMW, at last, is cashing in on them too.

I bought these knowing full well that I would never see the benefit of them and understood that I'm getting these purely for the looks.
If you're not tracking your car, there are literally zero situations where your stock braking system wont be enough. "Good" brakes come down to two things, ability to resist brake fade and ability to reject that heat into the atmosphere. The first can be accomplished with materials that work at high temps and having simply bigger braking systems to put that heat into (a big heavy rotor will accept more energy than a tiny rotor). The second comes from design of the vanes. "Good braking" comes down to tires If you're not repeatedly dumping massive amounts of energy into the braking system (you need to be going full throttle a LOT and then scrubbing all that energy into the brakes ... just to do that all again 10 seconds later) then even the wimpiest stock brakes will have enough power/bite/whatever you want to call it to lock up the tires and activate ABS. There are NO differences in single stop panic stop distances between braking systems. No canyon road will ever overwhelm your stock braking system for a car made in this century. No autocross event will overwhelm your stock braking system because you're simply not going fast enough to ever have that much energy to dump into the brakes. Big brakes are for looks if you don't hit the track ... but I'm ok with that and I love those red brakes !! |

knifeedge2k1, well said and I concur with all. Question: I have performed numerous full brake installs over the years. I wanted to do the retrofit myself to save a little coin on labor, but I see from the installation instructions coding is required from the dealer. If I self-install, I don't see why the car would not be driveable to the dealer where I could then pay for coding. Thoughts? Anyone ever do their own install or always dealership/reputable shop? I don't mind paying premium prices for premium parts, but I hate paying someone to do something I am more than capable of doing myself.

Note that I don't think all 19" wheels will clear the big front red calipers. I saw my front stock 19" have a specific inner shape to clear enough space for the caliper (rear wheels don't have this hollow). When I was searching for aftermarket wheels, I also saw many suppliers warning about non-compatibility with Performance brakes.
This is an old picture of my car. I'll try to take a better one since I'm running the snow tires on these wheels at the moment: No issue with aftermarket 20" wheels, of course.

Looks like swapping the brake components is pretty straight forward. Coding can be done at home with the proper equipment, or you can take it to the dealer. Brake feel may be enhanced after coding but it will not make the car inoperable if you don't do it. Many people seem to drive the car with the new hardware for a few weeks before getting around to loading the corresponding software.

Tackled the retrofit today. Took a few pics before and during, but it got too dark for a good after pic. I'll post a nice one tomorrow after a wash.

I did everything at an independent because it's impossible to work on your car yourself in Hong Kong If you know someone locally in your area on the forums they might even be able to do the coding for you in exchange for a pizza and some beers |

There are a couple ways to go about this if you have 19s that won't clear. 1) get new rims and tires 2) (what I did) is mixed and matched the front from the g20 kit with the rears from the G30 kit (374 front 370 rear) which will fit 19s for sure |
