G30 Display key (ebay)

Just bought a G30 540i and I'm happy to be back in a 5 series again... last one was a F 10. Anyway, I bought this G30 used and it has the option for remote parking... but the dealer did not have the display key needed. I called BMW and they want $1015. for a key, shipped from Germany. I am seeing the keys on ebay... can I buy one there and have it coded??? can it be coded by someone not in a BMW jumpsuit??? I have the two normal key fobs and coonct app, but the display key at the right price would be a want.

Be sure your car has that exact option. It will be on the build sheet, run your VIN to see. Don't confuse "S5DNA Parking assistance system Plus", which is not Remote parking. Also, I believe the actual Remote Parking option only included one key FOB (at some point), seems you have two.

Can you not get the dealer to do it for you as they didn't give you a key in the first place?

I bought it used from a third party dealer... I don't think the original owner turned it in with the vehicle.

Contact the previous owner. I always try and get the previous owners name when buying a used vehicle. If the dealer won't give, usually easy to find.

When I bought my 1988 M5 many years ago used, I found the previous owners name in glove box and contacted him. He ended up sending my lots of stuff he had for the car and confirmed the miles, etc.

Found out from Bimmertech that the used keys on eBay cannot be reprogrammed... I'm working with them to get a new key made... $899. One dealership here in Phoenix wanted 1015. and the other one was quoting 1400. Unreal.

I bought one from bimmertech for 899$, my car did not come with remote parking but i got it anyways cuz i thought it was cool. It will take a few weeks for it to be delivered and you will need a cable and a laptop so they can code it remotely. Bimmertech did a great job.

I don't have this option on my G30, but was very tempted to get it because it seems so cool at the time. From reading many posts on various forums, this is really a gimmick at best, and the cool factor seems to go away very quickly. The display key is quite a bit bigger than the regular key fob, and it requires charging all the time. Think twice before dropping close to $1k for just the key.

yup, and based on what others said you can do everything with your app (other than remote parking, which is just straight back and forward, not like some super advance "here is the spot go park yourself")

It's not a gimmick if you live in Europe. Our parking spots are getting smaller all the time. I've come back to my car numerous times to find out that the car next to mine is parked too close for me to get in comfortably. As I always carry my display key, it's been a useful feature for me.

Yes the app can do most of the things display key can do. But it's much slower than the key. The display key doesn't require line of sight to operate and has much wider radius than regular keys. So I'm able to use my display key from a third floor apartment.

Yea... probably gimmick, but if and when I move on from the vehicle it will be a nice perk to sell it with the key. I was able to work it out with the dealer and they are fronting $700.00 towards the key, so I'm out 199.00. I can deal with that expense.

My personal opinion - remote parking is not worth any money, it's useless because it's not parking at all, you can only move the car forward and backward.

I never found myself in a situation where I would need it. I regret paying for it, a complete waste of money.

The only thing you can't do from mobile BMW Connected app is remote parking, everything else is possible, and that leaves the digital key useless.

So you've never come back to your car to find out that someone has parked really close to your car in a public car park?

$899 is unreal too. If you haven't already bought it, search around. Several dealerships sell them online for $480-510 for the display key (66128728250) and around $22 for the emergency insert (51217444576). You do have to provide your ID and Registration/Proof of Ownership. They program it to your VIN, and all you have to do is then follow the pairing process once you get it.

Even in Arizona I have had that happen a few times. In the old days of bench seats and three on the tree, one could always enter on the passenger side and slide over. Not so easy in modern cars with huge center consoles and gear shift levers ready to spear you as you go over them.

But I have not had that happen very often. Once a year perhaps.

Display key has arrived and all functions work. Pretty cool to park and back it up from outside the car.
