m550 new car break-in ?

Hello All,

My m550 build is at the port, so time to start planning a pick up !!! I live in Arkansas but will be picking up the car at the dealer. The way I see it i have three choices:

(1) trailer it home myself in a rented, open carrier
(2) pay someone to trailer it in an enclosed auto carrier
(3) drive it home, but somehow respect the break-in procedures for the motor

My preference is (3) but generally the break in threads seem to indicate two things (1) Dont mash the pedal to the floor for the first several hundred miles and (2) dont' run at one speed continuously.

It's #2 that becomes sort of hard.

What would you guys do if it were your new car with 6 miles on it ?

Thanks,

Michael

Drive it myself!

Certainly not let some else do that

Yeh the run in procedures are detailed in the manual so yeh constant speed is not good so can you pick a non freeway:motorway route back? Make a trip out of it.

That's a good idea. I'd find a highway route. Those usually run through some times and speed limit changes, versus an interstate route. I prefer them, but it drives my wife nuts.

One thing I wish I did was get PPF film in the beginning before driving it on the highway. I did get the car ceramic coated, but it seems more prone to chips these days from the busy highways.

Other than that you should drive as the trip will help you get aquatinted with the car and features. You also want to watch your RPMs the first 1200 miles. It is very addicting to go past 3000-4000 RPM.

How far away is the dealer you are taking delivery at? Did I miss that part? Are we talking <100 miles or >500 miles?

Observe the break in procedures and don't overthink it. Just don't pound on it until you get to 1,000 miles then you are good.

I agree with the comment on PPF. I would worry more about stone chips than break in. Protect it from new and you will always have a perfect bumper and hood.

Just picked up our G30 with 11 miles on it. Had I been a few hours away, I would have trailered it myself. If I were a few states away, I would have paid someone to deliver it.

I actually rented an auto transporter from U-Haul two years ago just to avoid stone chips, possible road debris, and other folks handling my 7.5 miles old new vehicle during 300 mile journey back home.

Dang the distance makes all the difference and i forgot to say. This would be San Diego to Little Rock AR, approx 1600 miles.

I like the idea of taking the highway route, but looking at a map, there's not much there across NM and West Texas....

Just vary your speed... 80-70-60-70, etc. I think you're probably good as long as you don't spend more than about 5 minutes at one speed/rpm. You can also use a lower gear to vary engine speed.

To get to backroads you'll probably have to go through the middle of NM & TX.
