2018 540 D xDrive Resonating sound at speed.
This is a new garage queen for us. Sits next to the X5. I've noticed a resonant sound (humming like a ghost might) mainly at speeds over 70. It came with Goodyears on 19" Msport rims. The car has every option BMW offers, DHP included if it matters. Dealership can't isolate it but does recognize the problem and has documented it with corporate. Doesn't feel its wheel bearings. I lean towards these Goodyear ROF's as the culprit. A Michelin guy myself. Anyone else with a G30 having this problem? It has 3,500 miles on it. Love the car otherwise.

Thanks for the suggestion. The dealership did just that (so they claim) with three different cars with three different tire brands. The foreman did say the michelins did reduce the sound slightly. Not sure I'm ready to trash brand new Goodyears to give it a try yet......Took it for another long country drive without any destination in mind today. Such a pleasure to drive (even with the odd humming). This is my 12th BMW and by far the best.

Anyone have any updates on this? I've just bought a 2017 540i xdrive with 19" Goodyear Eagle Sport AS Runflats, and I've got a howl between 78mph and 84mph. Sounds like a tire or wheel bearing.

I'd describe it as a higher pitched howl or a lower pitched whine. |

Resonating/howling sound
Still have the sound. More noticeable at higher speeds but once identified its pretty much all speeds. Have a little less that 10k on her now. Replaced the GY RF's with PS4's. Still there. Dealership claims its the diesel whine. I've owned 4 diesels and three with Xdrive. None of the others had/have this issue. I've had her aligned 3 times to different specs as well. No difference. 540d x drive m sport with 19"' square setup OE rims. Loving the car other than.........

Has anyone had any luck getting a resolution?
I have the same booming/droning resonance noise on a 2021 G31 540i on 19" non-runflats. It's very noticeable from 25mph, but this low frequency resonance increases and becomes physically unpleasant at motorway speeds.
I've owned several 5 series from new, always M suspension, some with runflats and some not - so I'm very familiar with how they ride and sound, but they've been practically silent in comparison to this. It's such a shame because in every other respect the car is fabulous. I noticed that there's a thread with what sounds like the exact same problem as mine on X5s and they now have tuned 'vibration absorbers' fitted to the front suspension to resolve it. There's a video here and pictures of the parts fitted to dampen the noise (long thread, but worth reading if you have this issue): https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1698738 I just wondered if anyone has managed to get a satisfactory solution or outcome on G30/G31? Thanks |

I have some humming noise in range from 20-25 mph, running 19 ROF Goodyear.
Guessing that sound can be from 3mm thread left on them and uneven wear maybe. Going for new tyres next week in hope that will fix it. |

If this noise issue seems a mystery to US dealers, I would think that BMW would have ample data on this considering the huge number of vehicles sold outside of North America where diesels are the norm rather than the exception.

Based on my experience with a previous vehicle - i would point to one of the wheel bearing. I had a similar situation which took months to figure it out. At the end was one of the wheel bearings - with a strange behavior - no play, no grinding noise- only a resonating sound at above 70-80 mph - impossible to find it on the stationary vehicle. I found the issue only on test drives with 3 mechanics in the car - trying to find from which part of the car the sound was coming. Try this and let us know the results

Same issues in Europe... I have a brand new G31, 530e xDrive. As it is a plugin hybrid I can test it without the gas engine running. I can report that in my case it is not the engine. Both running the engine and in full electric mode the noise starts at about 100kmh (60mph) and peaks at 120kmh (75mph). I have Michelin Spot Pilot 4.
Sales advisor told me to book a test ride with the head mechanic. According to him small chance it is the tires. We had some snow couple of weeks ago. He says it could be part of the undercarriage that got loose due to build up of snow. That part is now vibrating because of wind at higher speeds. Hope they find it soon and we are not of on some wild goose chase. I you guys make any progress, please share. Can help with pointing these mechanics in the right direction :-) Thx |
