On the i4 it was reported they are no longer differentiating between "m sport" and "M" cars. I wouldn't be surprised if the same happens here, since this vehicle is supposed to be unique to the M division. All XMs would be M cars.

BMWblog hinted that they won't follow the normal "45e" naming structure and the different engines will have actual names. They were at least correct in saying this would be called "XM" and not an X8 or X8M earlier this summer.
You're mixing up "M-Sport" and "M-Performance." You can get an 330i with an M-Sport Package, they're saying the M340i and M3 are both M cars.

Stupid is as stupid does....

The Lexus design engineer's stupidity, adopting design queues from a 1900 steam locomotive is = or > BMW's design engineer's stupidity by absolutely ruining the most iconic and cherished kidney grille design....

My question is how they will differentiate XM models. XM M (true M car), XM 45e? And XM M550i. Will the M model be the XM M?

From what I get from the press release (as well as the closed room showing I attending last night in LA) there will be only one drivetrain offered. So just the XM.

I think an illuminated roundel in the center of the grilles would be better looking than these larger grilles traced with LED's. Mercedes Benz did a nice job with that.

The difference between BMW and Lexus, is that Lexus actually had a completely logical philosophical reason behind the grille design, may not be appreciated internationally, but it is deeply cultural that reflects its origin. The other one is designed by a narcissistic psychopath, ignores all traditions that is BMW and charter a blind path towards the future because... reasons

While I appreciate the methodology and expertise and precision, the gaping hole and 1900's locomotive "cow catcher" front end is appalling, to the extent I choose to never purchase a Lexus or Toyota product.

The decimation of the iconic BMW kidney grille is equally shameful. The two timeless design elements were the kidney grilles and the round headlamps. Both timeless elements have fallen to the modern trends that are found on the majority of other marques, which is the antithesis of developing and retaining a historical and identifiable design element separated from the masses.

Oh... my... God...

It's now just overdesigned for the sake of overdesigning
I guess its main goal is to shock and awe, i guess it did achieve its main goal

Let's be clear about general sales number. Yes, BMW sales have increased. But Mercedes, Lexus, Audi and Porsche have all experienced record sales as well, so more cars from luxury brands are being sold overall (maybe the China effect?). The real question is whether BMW has increased it's market share since the "ugly" designs came out? The only stat I've seen are from GrussGott from this forum showing BMW's recent market share have leveled back to 2005 levels.

BMW's iconic and timeless kidney grille design has turned into a freaking Mattel Toys Transformer car....hideous-maximus.

Because those are the outliers. I remember times where I'd walk into a BMW dealer and wish I could have one of everything they made. Now? There's one, maybe two I'd consider. There just isn't much that's compelling or exciting coming out of BMW right now. I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way. This new XM is terrible and embodies everything that's wrong with BMW right now.
Agree with Chihuahua and furthermore... few have "ignored the good BMW does." It has been acknowledged, for example, the G8x is a very good driving machine that handles well, accelerates like no M car before it, etc. Generally, people have acknowledged the G8x still handles better than, say, an RS4/5 and or C63. It's a great car until you step outside to look at it.

And Mercedes HAS been heavily criticized for it's upcoming 4-cyl C63 W206, even in MBWorld and other Mercedes forums. But the thing is, it kind of makes sense. The world is going electric and batteries weight a ton, so mating heavy batteries in a hybrid with a heavier 6-cyl would make it super heavy for a compact car. On the other hand, why is BMW just now (so late!) following a decades-old trend of big grilles at a time when cars are being electrified and hence don't even need grilles? It doesn't make sense, unless you believe it's because it's for the sake of a great design, which the majority would disagree.

Greetings from Seattle,
I have exhausted my literary attempt at adjectives and explanation and did my best to express my deeply founded thoughts on the grotesque design elements that have been ELIMINATED in the BMW marque (see my post above regarding the desecration of the timeless and beloved kidney grilles and round headlights that were the iconic and immediate visceral connection to BMW).

I lament that my 2007 BMW Z4M Roadster does not have round headlights....the grille still resembles the timeless marque's design intent.

It is evident in my expressions in this thread that the loss of the two most important and recognizable design elements (kidney grilles and round headlights) that tied the brand (BMW) to its passionate followers has been replaced with fill-in-the-blank design elements that could be copied/pasted from low level throw-away cars such as Kia and Hyundai....BMW has lost their way.

This is the BMW you're in love with (as am I, as are most BMW purists)

PS The Benz added for nostalgia,

it's the only specimen in the world and lives right here in Adelaide, South Australia.

It's owned by a retired school teacher since 1974. He's been offered $20m for it and has refused to sell it, but he races it in the world's greatest tarmac rally, the Adelaide Rally (stands to demonstrate what goes through the mind of a purist)

https://www.adelaiderally.com.au/entry-list

I'll be in the Rally next year by which time I'm hoping to have done the break-in service in my M2CS,or the year after if I happen to get allocation for the Hideous-Maximus M4CSL (still cracks me up, you made my day)

Well my friend

I kinda liken the M2CS to a vampire, new blood running through old veins.

The pure joy that was the 2002tii has been encapsulated and pumped in the veins of the F87CS.

On windy Hills drives, the tail turns the car more than the steering wheel, although, if in a spot of bother, the front end is astonishingly responsive. This car is work of magicians; pure and simple.

It's so much more fun to drive the shorter wheelbase of the F87CS, than it is the F80/82C; you'd wonder what kind of sorcery the engineers manifested to generate such command of the road all the while granting you torque from zero to infinity seamlessly and obediently.

And that magic button that lights up MDM, .... say no more.

This is, all jokes aside, a true work of art, perhaps even dark art; I don't call my car Merlin without reason.

Here's a little something for your viewing pleasure

Your visceral description of the M2CS's DNA is electrifying. This is perhaps the most pleasing new car video....ever.

I am a top-down roadster lover, but this is one of the few hardtops that could lure me, for sure.

Congrats!
