Many manufacturers are cracking down on indy service materials. Ferrari just did the same to many indy suppliers to control who has information.

You'll have to cite some official industry publication evidence of this. I doubt that is the case and most likely is illegal.

BMW took its intellectual property off line that was being illegally distributed over the internet. There's no conspiracy here, just a legal financial business decision.

I think people just need to relax. Realize that newtis was an anomaly as said by efthreeoh. Can’t think of any other German manufacturer which would let something like newtis slide for this long. This is bad of course but BMW was within its rights and you can still get the same info for free from Ista. Worst case, you’ll have to go and purchase one day subscription and download the stuff you need, although it’s not that practical since I don’t think bmw tis has pdf versions of the entire sections.

They already do that through the obd protocol and normal obd2 port.
There is (in the EU) a law that automakers have to comply/work together that independant garages can service vehicles so that they are safe and enviromentally adequate.
So most/all codes regarding to engine, powertrain and undercarriage/brakes are catagorized in generic codes.
But codes to service parking sensors or things with radio/nav etc etc etc are all 'deep obd' codes. (non generic manufacturer specific).
Some obd toolmakers pay bmw more to get more coding in their tools

Yes, exactly to point of OBDII. It grew out of California as a CARB requirement and adopted by the US DOT. Implemented in 1996 model year cars and up to standardize emissions trouble codes.

It's a legal issue (copyright) after all. Technically, there are many options to workaround it (decentralized, p2p style - e.g. IPFS, etc.).

Will be interested to see how it plays out in the BMW owners' community.

If you've got cookie, you are luck. ONLY some will know what this means.

Ebay is full of TIS DVD's for €10-20.

If your car is from 2009 of before, that's your source.

Or find some .iso file of it. There are also .iso files floating around of the EBA (installation instructions for retrofits/accessories)

I don't see them taking down ETK's. That's just their parts catalog and they only benefit from these being online.

I have spent so much at BMW for spare parts after I found some ETK back in 2007, no realising how much options were available for my car.

I don't see partnumbers being IP.

Back to car's that don't break down, back to Toyotas 😐
To all whom it may concern, pay one day and download all the stuff you need, and upload it here, I'll do that in the nearest convenience,
And as for realoem, it's surely in it's way so do that too
Another note, BMW, while it has the right to do so on basis of IP law, they're actually losing not so many customers (basically youtube diyers and bimmerpost ppl etc) whom do support a larger section of their customers fixing thier cars.
And by doing so, they are discouragingly ppl who don't want to be ripped off from buying BMWs.
BMW here in Egypt as in all parts of the world has a bad reputation for breaking down, specialy here where it's hot and many problems regarding cooling system occur, and I'm the only one in my friends who owns a BMW, owing to the fact that I'm a cat guy thanks to the late newtis and realoem sites, some of them were encouraged to own BMWs , actually two bought it new, and another was asking me a couple of days ago about a used one he wants to buy, and he told me (if it broke down I'm counting on you). The reason behind that is that dealerships , they screw u up on purpose , rip you off and at some instances delay necessary repairs so you have to pay lumps of money in the future (as the trans oil life time thing).
But at the end of the day its still can be fixed, download all the stuff for your car. I know it's not everything.
Ah , and one thing I really hated about my brother's Merc w204 is that I can never find a part number, bad move BMW 😔

Ah one more thing, I predict that newtis won't be up and running for long, they delete all the data before the next year, so hurt up ppl

Problem would be if the site was making "any" $ from the exchange of information and if so, even from advertising, then BMW would have a right to shut it down.

Is crazy though, can't tell you how many forums and such with my other and older vehicles that I've learned, educated myself from and been able to perform untold repairs and mods to my cars.

So is YouTube going to be challenged next? How about Google searches? This is absurd!
It's sort of weird as the site specifically stated not affiliated with BMW.

This sounds similar to John Deere and the issues farmers had with not being able to fix their tractors. Eventually they were granted the John Deere servicing information for a while under the (The Right-to-Repair Movement).
