I have spec'd my 530e M Sport on the US configurator. Interestingly it lists as $68k which is approx £ 53k which is what I paid for my 'optioned up' car. The UK price lists are a joke - my car at list was £ 63k so £ 10k discount.

What sort of discounts do you get in the US ?
Your taxes are one of the biggest contributing factors on the prohibitive prices in the majority of new cars in Europe.

If you want to learn about effin great big taxes, try buying one in Australia. I had to pay AUD$25,679.63 in taxes on my 540i.

Anyway.. yes, yes, sorry, no need to push - I'm getting off my soapbox as this isn't a thread about taxes and grumpy old men. Just couldn't help it in reference to the above.

Terrible, I don't know how most people can afford a vehicle in these countries.

As well, 5 series in some of the Asian countries actually cost double the price. One of friends' acquaintances recently purchased a fully loaded brand new 540i M Sport, paid approximately USD equivalent of $150,000.00!!!! Needless to say, nearly half of the price were taxes, surcharges and miscellaneous fees. Now....that's expensive!!

That's just it .. we can't afford it We basically just pretend, then jump on forums like this to have a cry after hearing what the US customers pay.

The irony is that the argument for whacking large chunks of tax on Euro imports was to protect the local car building industry. Never mind the fact that essentially all major manufacturers have closed shop and gone back to overseas manufacturing plants. Taxes & protective levies however have stayed... you gotta love politicians.

In South Africa it has a comprehensive 5 year 100k km motorplan wich just about covers everything.

Also, after 16 months of ownership, no problems so far.
