Hear it occasionally also. Have actually had my foot on the brake pedal once or twice when it occurred, and can feel vibration in the pedal as the noise occurs.

Last Friday the garage updated software which controls the auto hold/park break. In some instances it can hold in safety too long causing a similar noise.
Apparently BMW pushes out a PUMA (not sure this is correctly spelled). The video with the sound sounded like my grinding noise. Hopefully it is now done. |

I am happy to report that after several times reporting the issue and trips to the dealer they performed an i-STEP upgrade that resolved this issue. It was related to the braking system as suspected.

Also get the noise but not always when my foots on the brake. The dealer couldn't replicate it as it seems to be intermittent. Anything I can use to go back to them on this?

It’s a problem with the braking system. I would tell them to open a PUMA case and escalate. If they simply kept their cars all up to date these problems would be far and few between. IMO All manufacturers have got to get to OTA software for all modules if they want to keep up with the rapidly progressing auto industry.

Will this cause any damage if it’s left as it is for a while?
My vehicles currently on nbtevo_O181841. What’s the latest version and will it give anything new? Last edited by creativ101; 01-05-2020 at 03:19 PM.. Reason: Correction |

Just had the PUMA update done on my '18 540i. I had to send my SA a link to this conversation chain for him to move on the repair and reach out to BMW tech services. Hopefully this will take care of the grinding issue.

Just had my 2019 530i in for the rear camera recall. SA told me that the software update “probably” contained the istep update which would solve the noise. Haven’t heard it so far. Will update in a few days after driving some more.

Hi, for those of you who were able to get your dealer to perform the software upgrade, can you please share the name of the dealership?
I would like to share that information with my dealer so hopefully a service dept to service dept dialogue can help my case with my dealer to move along, as they indicated last time that the sound is "normal"... thank you in advance! Bill |

Hi all,
My '18 520 is suffering the same fate as all you guys above. I took my car to my local BMW garage here in Ireland. I printed off this thread, highlighted the known fixes and they have just rang to tell me that there is no PUMA for this that they can see. Does anyone have any specific details or any garages in Ireland or the UK they can ring to get more detail from? They are adamant there is no PUMA. |

I had this random, grinding noise for years on my pre-LCI G30. The dealer couldn't fix it, but advised me not to use the parking break. Other than this noise, I had no issues with the car over the 3 years.
Since I got the new LCI version, I haven't had this issue. It is the build quality that is somehow weaker (larger body gaps around the trunk; doors were not properly fitted at the factory and had to be aligned - wind noise was terrible at high speeds; despite fixing the doors, the pre-LCI's cabin felt quieter). |

But it also depends on what grinding noise you’re hearing too. I can often hear what I’d calling a winding noise, but I guess you could call it grinding when the shutters in the front are opening and closing. If it is that then I’d say the noise is normal… |
