Catless DP?

I'm new to the mods and looking to run a map that requires a DP. I have heard a lot of negative things about catted DPs that they really don't work long term and if I run a catless DP what can I do to overcome the check engine light when it comes time for inspection?
I'm in TX if that makes a difference I know each state is different.

You are better off joining the G30 Facebook Group with these questions. That group is full of people that mess with downpipes. Most of us here don't mess with downpipes, catted or not.

I run catless. It certainly stinks. Somehow different than my N54 which is also catless. It doesn't smell bad if at all in the car with windows up and HVAC off, I think I'm getting the worst of it in the winter between letting it idle to warm up and having the heater on.

Catless inspection depends on your state and area's regulations.

Catted downpipes smell less but the ones that still make power will be as difficult to pass as the catless ones. The ones that will pass as is without a tune solution, can't be making that much gains IMHO because clearly not much more is flowing, or it would throw a CEL.

I'd suggest having a read in the Engine, Exhaust, Drivetrain and Tuning Mods subforum rather than here in the General forum. I've kinda researched this before a long time ago and most everyone with catless DP's will mention the bad smell. I think you will be happier if you chose a high flow catted DP, but they are typically more than double the price. Some high flow cat manufacturers will even guarantee no check engine light (Stone Exhaust Eddy Cat DP as I recall), but most like VRSF won't. I think you can code the CEL off if you're tuning with BM3. If you're just gonna use a JB4 then you better choose your DP carefully.
