I'm the proud owner of a CPO 2022 540i Xdrive and I'm very happy to be part of your cult. My G30 is a 1yr 8mo lease return and other than some scuffs/scratches, the car is tip top w/ less than 10k miles. This is by far the coolest car I've ever owned and sometimes I just sit in it parked in my garage admiring it's styling and engineering and breathing in that BMW leather. My CPO warranty covers me up until May 2027 w/ unlimited miles which was the major deciding factor in pulling the trigger in the first place.

While at the dealership, I declined all of the dealership extended warranty coverages because a) the condition is very new and b) IMO EWs are products sold based on calculations of whether or not my car is going to crap out during the coverage/mileage period, which means the dealership is hedging it's bets, and in order for that to be a profitable product the odds MUST be their favor. So, I think it would be in my own best interest if I just use put away the cost of that EW and apply it to any post CPO repairs. To me, it's like casino gaming where all odds are calculated to be profitable for the house whereas I might win a few big hands here and there, but on a long enough timeline, I will lose exactly what the house calculated me to lose.

My CU sent me a brochure for 3rd party EW's through Mercury (see attached). They want $3750 for 5 years / +100k miles on top of my current odometer. Now, that's actually not a horrible deal if the 5 years starts when the CPO warranty ends, but I learned that it starts immediately, so including the existing CPO, I'll be getting 2 additional years with Mercury. When I decided to buy the car, I had planned to only keep it until the CPO ends.

Any kind of EW forces me to be married to the car, and of course because it's new to me I sometimes let myself fantasize about keeping it forever, but the lesson I learned is that things change. My last car was a Subaru I used to haul my family. But like I said...things change...and I'm a little weary of expensive, long term commitments. So I'm trying to figure out whether or not I want to commit long term to this sexy G30. What do y'all think? Do you think the Mercury EW is worth that price based on it's coverage and the current condition my car? How long can I reasonably expect my G30 to run before the first major ($2000+) repair? Coming from a Toyota, I was very weary in buying out my lease to own my BMW. I've come to accept that the anxiety for reliability is worth the price for the smile, fun, and comfort the G30 brings.

That being said, for you, unless you see yourself being at 100k miles (the mileage limit) at the end of your warranty, I'd self insure. Extended warranties are calculated so that the seller comes out on top. I've done a lot of reading of people's experience with extended warranties and come to the conclusion that it's not really worth it.

Not only do you have to make sure you do things right according to the warranty, there's also the hassle of getting denied the warranty claim for whatever reason the warrantor is trying to use to weasel out of paying for it.

Back in the early says of EW's my dad was buying a washing machine from Sears (remember them? They always had parking ) and they were trying to hard-sell an EW. He had one question. He asked the sales dude if he needed the EW because the washing machine they were selling him was junk . So endeth the pressure to purchase the EW.

I remember when Sears pushed the EW's. They also pushed service contracts really hard too.

I wouldn’t bother, B58 is solid as rock, probably just as, if not more reliable than Toyota’s engines.

I think the risks with this cars are things like electronics, or headlights which seem to be very expensive.

I think it’s these sort of items that will kill a car these days rather than the engine

I just learned about this yesterday, but evidently Porsche headlights are easily removed externally, and thieves are ripping them out of Porsches all over the place to resell.

Sounds like they are making light work of that….

As I say yeh I think the engine will be fine it’s all the other things that can be so expensive

It’s why cars seem to get written off so quickly these days.

As regards insuring , I personally go the self insure route. There’s no right answer .
