I'm talking peolle who don't know what the track is, or don't understand cars much.. For example I saw some videos of soccer mom's or wives etc talking about driving their x3 only in sport mode.

Now it's obvious they don't use the paddles either (they most likely have no clue wtf even it is or does)

But here's the problem with this.

They cruise in sport mode only on let's say the highway or roads, but in sport mode in a zf8, the auto gear selector NEVER goes into 8th gear, 7th gear is maximum..

They have NO fukn clue about this, don't know it wastes more fuel for no reason, and theyre just killing the engine faster making it Rev more than it should for cruising.

Things like this, just make me think, wtf are these peolle even doing? It's obvious they're not thinking at all so wtf are they doing? It's obvious most have no clue how gears work, so you can bet they're out there in 7th gear effing up the engine and fuel mileage faster than had they not touched anything and just left it in comfort, the mode most suitable for them, who only drive in straight lines doing well the speed limit or a bit above anyway.

I am driving in sport mode more and more now even when it is not necessary, though not on highway trips. Have you read about LSPI?

One observation I have made since I have been using sport mode more is that the trans will shift up to 8th on the highway. It will hold 7th longer but the computer is pretty smart and seems to sense how you are driving. This is in my F90 M5.

I mean at the same time with how new cars are and their drive modes for like every little thing... I understand them. Having the car in sports mode makes the pedal throttle response sharp and overall your car is just less slow to react to your inputs. My dad got a big Hyundai Palisade and he always drives it in sport. Like sport mode is the new "normal" mode, they create the other modes with software and add limitations. It's how I always kind of saw it.

And no, driving in 7th gear instead of 8th won't be "effing up the engine". But it should still go in the the top gear if you are cruising like other commenters say. My 335is does it but yeah it's a 10 year old car to.

my crv with a cvt has a sport mode....as such there is no such thing and a placebo button....logic has left the door a long time ago in cars.

I guess I am guilty too. I always drive in sport because I like the throttle response better. But it is an M car and has been tracked. My DCT does go into 7th gear on the highway if I am in auto mode.

Huh? What do wives have to do with it? There are “wives” who go on track days and drive very sporty just the same as there are “husbands” who do so…

Lastly, “sport” mode brings more to the table than just “track” driving. It alters the acceleration curve of the vehicle, holds shift points longer, and other tweaks that can make the car more responsive and more agile. That can lead to a nicer driving experience and I am known to engage it when I’m in the mood for that kind of driving experience.

It also isn’t harder on the engine nor is it guaranteed to be worse on fuel. My 530e is surprisingly efficient in Sport mode. Harder on the engine would be the driving realities you’re likely to encounter on the track where you’re hard accelerating a LOT and braking a lot then rinse and repeat. So the engine is constantly in the high RPM range.

But either way, their car they can use it how they please. You have yours to use how you please!
