Windshield replacement

Last week, as I was pulling out of the garage, I noticed a foot-long crack on the passenger side of the windshield.

2023 550.

I called Memphis BWM, it's about 2500.

My insurance uses Safelite, the estimate on their site is 1010.

Waiting to hear back if they will cover it being done at BMW. I sure hope so.

Had to replace mine as well (2023) and ended up doing it at the dealer. They did a great job outside of the wipers needing to be adjusted to stop from hitting.

Paid $2400, luckily my insurance covered with $0 deductible. They also preferred safelite, but tell them you want to go though the dealer.

How much?????

Why have these windscreens gotten so expensive
Even those designed for HUDs I wouldn’t expect to be much more, it’s “just” a different inner tapered layer

Wow

Labor costs have gone through the roof on windshield replacements since there's calibration of the various Driver Assist features that has to be done after replacement, and it's time-consuming.

Insurance most likely will only pay for aftermarket glass which Safelite stocks, that is why it is $1,100. Push hard and if you have to, pay the difference. Not so much because the BMW glass is superior (it's ,probably made by the same company without the BMW stamp), but because the dealer will do a better job on average with sensors, calibration and the seal, which if not done right you will hear wind noise you won't be able to un-hear.

I had the same issue on my 2016 Corvette Z06. Got a bad stone chip in my field of vision. I have a HUD on that car like th BMW. I called my State Farm agent and told him I needed to get it replaced with a factory windshield for the HUD. Too many stories about non-factory windshields not working right with HUD. He had me contact claims and explain that as well, which I did. Sent them pics of the chip and the GM manufacturer's info in the lower passenger side corner. State Farm agreed to pay for the GM HUD windshield and used a local installer that was very good. But a difference with mine and the BMW windshield is cost. My GM HUD windshield was about $1,400 done at the dealer and was probably about $1,000 for the independent installer. Cost me my deductible, $250. Installers were very professional and used an interesting piece of equipment to remove the old windshield. Installer said it save a lot of time and sore muscles over the manual way and was his most cherished tool. Kind of a winch attached to the inside with a big suction cup with a thin stainless wire that was helped around the outside by an assistant while the other guy cranked it. A few pics. --Bob

The cost of windshields and headlights is why I opted for “Full Glass” coverage on my insurance in NY state. A new headlight is also on the thousands if the plastic gets cracked.

Thankfully, I have never had a problem with USAA allowing me to use a dealership or OEM certified shop for repairs.

I’d imagine you also will have a much better time getting the dealer to repair any issues as well. Since they are required to warranty their repairs for 2Ys.

Nice, very cool pics. I stand over them too when I have had it done in my work parking lot on cars I don't care as much about. It's pretty stressful watching them though. I doubt my dealer would allow me to watch, lol. I had my E39 done in my work parking lot by an independent glass company. They were very professional and they also used OEM seals (not OEM glass) and cowls which I paid for. They stopped at the dealer and picked them up on the way to my car. They had aftermarket I would not use. That said, they had to come back and do it again because of wind noise.

Yup, I left that part out which I always close with. Recourse is seamless with the dealer.
