Retrofit larger 12.3" iDrive screen from G30 LCI

I'm wondering if it's possible to retrofit the larger 12.3" iDrive CID from the G30 LCI models on pre-LCI G30 models with iDrive 6. I don't care about iDrive 7, but I do like the larger screen. Wondering if it's even possible from a physical connector perspective and also from a system resolution perspective (not sure if iDrive 6 hard codes a specific resolution or if it is dynamic). Anyone have any ideas?

Probably a specific resolution I would think, but it hopefully won’t be too noticeable. On my F30, I had retrofitted the 10.25” screen from the F15 X5, and it looked good even though my ID4 head unit was set for the 8” screen.

I too have been eagerly awaiting a part number, but since BMW stopped publishing their part lists offline back in January, it’s been tough to find info on the LCI. I will be at the dealer in a few weeks for service, so I planned on hopefully either getting a loaner, or poking around the lot and seeing if I could find the part # for the bigger screen without drawing too much attention to myself lol. Or maybe I’ll harass the parts people and see if they’ll give me the part number... either way, definitely would wait for used ones to pop up online vs paying the high price for new.

I don’t believe the dashboard changed for LCI, so it should fit right in, and video connectors for BMW haven’t changed in years so I don’t think that will be a problem either.

Finally got in today for service and remembered why I hate my local dealership... “you can’t order parts that didn’t come with the car” “we don’t give part numbers” “the screens are computer modules that require programming”... you clearly know from our conversation that I’m not an idiot when it comes to parts and retrofitting, please don’t treat me like one.

The connection is the same. Navigation will be smaller (around 2/3 screen) and Carplay will also be partial. Everything else works fine.

I have been thinking about the who issue of screen lately and I have concluded that if one has a good HUD, a small IDrive screen is fine. So long as the key matters one might one to look at while driving are in the HUD (navigation, speed, etc.), I don't care about how big my IDrive screen is.

OP: do you have a HUD?

Agree. The HUD is THE place for info whilst you are driving. Idrive screen doesn't need to be huge in opinion. Mostly just have the map on there just to see the traffic situation.

Each to their own but feel the new screen is just that bit too large and looks like an after thought ( I suppose it is to some degree)

Yeah the HUD is definitely the place.

I think they just increased the screen size to have something new to throw on the spec sheet so it is an afterthought I agree. The screen size increased in MY2020 and again in MY2021. The MY2021 size seems oversized to me and feels like it encroaches a bit on your view when I sat in a car at the dealership during my last service visit.

HUD is the way to go as SteveInArizona noted.

I'm not sure how ID6 would fare with the bigger screen, however I did successfully retrofit my 2020 530e with ID7 to the bigger screen. It was plug and play, no additional coding required.

Here's my post

https://g30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...8#post27092308

My brother had a 2021 M5 that he totaled so I took the screen out of his car. I didn't purchase it from BMW. However I have a friend in the parts department at BMW and he said the screen is $4,200 USD and he would provide me a part number. I can post once I get it. I just purchased a 2021 540i and everything is identical.

I don't. I took the screen out of my brother wrecked M5. I will post part number once I receive it.

Please spend some time with the bigger display to see if you like it. I had a MY2021 G30 loaner for a few days while my car was being serviced and I found the screen size to be a bit obnoxious. The font size of the menus seems abnormally large and I did not like it at all. It just didn't look right. My 2 cents.

What on earth - incredible they charge that much. The 8.8 inch screens for the f30 were like 2-300

Amazing. A 55" LG OLED tv is well less than 2 grand and BMW wants $ 4200 for a 12.3" screen.
