U.K. - 530d touring

Hi all, was originally looking at the 540i touring but also having a think about the 530d as slightly cheaper. What's the current forum thoughts around buying a diesel? Insane or not a biggie?

I’m in Ireland. Personally, I wouldn’t go diesel just now, depends on your mileage etc though I guess, and your driving routine. I’m going with a 530e myself.

I’d say petrol ,or hybrid.

I'm in Dublin so rubbish roads can be a nightmare with 20s and RFt!

I bought my 2017 530d in Exeter and have had it a year now.

Best all round car I've every owned

Tons of toque so it's effortless to drive and is plenty quick.

It does 1000 km a tank and with CarPlay the nav etc will never be out of date.

Plenty of space as a family car and it came with a fold out tow bar which I use for a four bike rack.

In terms of the 530e that are superb if you live close to work etc and have impressive performance.

I've only 40,000 miles on mine and I'll keep it until 80,000

d a F10 530d and thought it was a great engine, made driving very easy , lots of grunt.
The only thing I would say about diesel is "the war against diesel".
Whilst this will be EU6 and able to drive into cities, just something to consider for the future in case more restrictions are placed on diesel.

If you're high mileage then diesel obviously makes sense from that point of view.

If you do the mileage for a diesel, then go for the 530d. It´s a fantastic engine that suits the 5-series really well.

I think it is very much mileage dependent here... if you do a lot of miles then the diesel will be best. As others have said though there is the ongoing "war on diesel" so whilst you'd be ok for a while - restrictions might come in during future years. If you plan on keeping long term I'd go for the petrol

I haven’t driven the G30 530d, but I’ve driven all the previous ones and always thought they were great.

I’ve just picked up a 540i touring though, and I can tell you it’s a lot of fun!

As others have said, I’d decide based on your mileage and how long you intend to keep it.

At least here in Denmark, but possibly multiple places in the EU, the "war against diesel" are starting to go the other way. New dieselcars with DPF, AdBlue etc. pollutes less than equal new petrol cars... Diesel is not dead

Agree Gaselle. The tables are turning a bit in regards to the use of diesel - GTL could potentially increase the focus on "black fuel" not being so "black" after all.

I'm driving the g31 530d in Denmark

Went to the dealership today and the prices they quoted for the 530d were high as well! £2k down at £700 a month for the 540i, 2k down and £609 a month for the 530d. Advertising 549 down and 549 a month as well!

In the UK residuals have fallen through the floor so leases are starting to recognise that. My 1 year old 530e with 4K on it is worth just £ 28k in px against a £ 55k new car. Last Nov the car and all options listed at £ 65k and I paid £ 56k.

Yeah - it's just crazy to see that. Might end up looking used instead! Used to be pcp was a good way to finance higher list price cars but for 700 a month I'd have thought be into real M territory.

I have a 530d Touring which is superb

Its bloody fast when I want it to be, handles well, is discrete and does over 50mpg whilst 'making progress' on the motorway

It feels like the writing is on the wall for diesel and I bought it on PCP so I can just hand it back as goodness knows what a big diesel will be worth in just under 4 years time???? As things stand its obvs EU6 compliant with Ad Blue but there is a growing trickle of resentment such as the idiotic Bristol plans and my local authority now charge 50% more to park a diesel on a meter in town

Cheers

I've a 2017 G30 530d that I bought in Exeter and imported to Dublin

Most complete car I've ever owned

I get 1000km just driving the way I want

Tax is only €280 per year

All the performance I need

So it's just up to the EU now to see if they can ruin it!

I think the writing is on the wall for any ice now with no ice cars allowed to be sold from 2030.

Still think that's optimistic and trying to push us to battery electric which whilst suits some very well, does not suit a large proportion of the driving public

I was tempted by a 550 here in the U.K. but it's a shed load of money so I think I will stick with my 540 until the government say I can't drive it any more!
Last couple of years to buy a car without a speed limiter as well.

Sad to see residuals so low , dread to think what my 3.5 year old 540 is worth now. List was £61 when new.
