No music hard drive?
Well, don't I feel stupid. I've got a 2021 M550 coming, but no music hard drive. So, no CD player and no music hard drive? I guess my "usb" and "spotify" learning curves will have to increase. Hey, I had an 8 track tape machine in my 1962 Buick Skylark....oh, the memories.

iDrive 7 has the music HD still (at least it does on MY2020 so I am assuming it does in MY2021 since the software is the same). They did remove the DVD drive starting in MY2020 though so you can only add music to the HDD from a USB drive is my understanding. I think the DVD drive is still included in markets outside the US though which is why it is still "blanked out" in the LCI.

I would be surprised if they have removed the HD as the system is the same version of ID7 as other cars with the hd. That said, BMW are keen to sell BMW Music which renders the hd redundant for most people. I have a hd but never listen to the tracks on it as i find Spotify as easy to use but with a massive choice. Intelligent voice command will find and play the most obscure tracks on Spotify !

It is largely useless in iDrive 7 cars without a DVD drive since you need to load it from a USB drive. Much easier to just leave that same drive in place. Quote:
I miss my 5 disc DVD player from my MB since it was nice to have a few CDs on tap. But honestly it was an overload of choices. Even though I loaded the HD with music in my MY2020 it was more as a test lol. |

The CD/DVD drive has been an option here in DK since the introduction of the G30/31, but I haven´t seen one without it yet.

Color me confused
Well, now I really am confused! 2021 G30 "music collection" 20GB hard drive.........or not? Just read a review of BMWs new "Connected Music" streaming app that says downloads can be saved on the car's hard drive for off line play?? So, a new LCI G30 doesn't have a hard drive???? what?
I clearly have some bad info from somewhere. Guess I'll find out when I get the car. |

I believe it is gone, at least for use for your own music. Another person who has their 2021 said it is gone, and I have been reading the manual for my incoming car in the BMW Drivers Guide app and there is zero reference to the Music Collection or internal hard drive.

I wondered about this as there is coding to disable the hard drive on G series my21. I assumed it was there as a new system was being introduced, not being removed completely.
So the question is - is the drive physically gone, or is it just disabled in coding? |

I don't find navigation slow using the HDD in my MY2020 though maybe it will be faster in other areas. |

OK guys....found out today on an authoritative dealer genius you tube video, that, there is no accessable music collection harddrive in US 2021 5 series. BMW wants to use their new BMW connected music streaming service. Only way to bring your own music is on a USB stick apparently.
I do think other markets have both CD players and music collection harddrives. Begs the question of whether the drive is still in the cars, and maybe accessible with coding...we will see. |

Isn’t it possible that if they disabled it, it was because the capacity is needed for something else (ie, new BMW maps, remote software upgrades, etc)?

It likely was cut as a cost savings measure as I believe they went from a HDD to an SSD and they are more expensive per GB and a HDD. |

Hard drive update
Just a solution update for those that want to bring your own music. I bought a very small, 64GB, USB stick on Amazon, put my tunes on it, and just leave it in the charging tray USB port. Works fine and doesn't obstruct the tray...at least with my old Galaxy S7 active.
