Wireless Charging Question

I have a 2018 540i with wireless charging. It does a pretty lousy job of charging the phone, more like it just holds the charge. My lease is up in 4 months and wondering, is it any better on the 2021?

I must say, however, that yours may just be defective. Mine, 2019 M550, charges the phone quickly, with no problems at all.

My 2017 does the same. Rapidly as well but I don't use Apple Car Play in my car—use the BMW proprietary nav software.

Are you running ACP? Or using the phone for music? There was another thread on here that suggested that may be the cause of the charging issue.

I use the BMW software, not ACP. Also, I periodically use the phone for music, but that does not seem to impact the charging function in my car. BTW, I have iPhone 10r.

I previously had the iPhone X. And now have the iPhone 12.

Still.... Odd. Last night picking up dinner, when I left home my phone was at 59%... roughly 15 minutes in the car and when I returned home—I was at 67%. (While on a phone call)

If it were me...I would have BMW dealership check it out.

I use ACP exclusively so maybe that's it. I'm a realtor in LA so I practically live in my car. I use ACP all the time for listening and responding to text messages. Also Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Spotify. I'm turning the car in soon so not going to bother having the dealer see if there's something wrong with it. Hopefully the 2021 will be better.

2021 is exact same charger so I doubt it will make a difference. Most likely this will be addressed in the next “platform” where they introduce support for MagSafe and some ventilation in the tray.

But no matter what. Wireless charging is always slower and more problematic than the cord. First you have the power output of the wireless charger and then you have the heat issue.

If you need the phone to charge fast you will need to use the cord in the center console. That will charge at full speed.

My 2017 is horrible at charging.. it barely keeps up with the power drain when I'm using ACP. The phone heats up and actually stops charging sometimes.

I blame Apple...

Can confirm, the Wireless Charging for me is pointless also, for the same reasons. I have an Iphone XS.

I use a cable as it charges much faster.
