Long life?
Since this is my first European car, I was just wondering, how long the E90 should last before giving small troubles?
My Guess is 80K miles or 5 years before any troubles. Many good Japanese brands go much beyond 100K miles before any troubles. Please give me your input. Thanks

Nobody would have had 80K miles on E90 but may be just a guess on previous BMW 3 series experinces on its longtivity?

100 miles. That's when I started having problems with the key recognition unit. The dealer eventually replaced it. No problems since then (3,500 miles now).

My boyfriend has a 1986 325 with 190,000. Just now we are having an issue with the accelerator. But up to that point.....10 years and a whole lotta miles with no problems.

I drove my ’72 BMW 2002 for 150,000 miles (not kilometres) and sold it in good mechanical condition (2002’s rusted like hell) to a second owner. I have kept every previous 3 series I have owned for a full model cycle putting between 220,000 - 270,000 kilometres on each one. However, the current E46 that I am trading when I take delivery of an E90 in a couple of weeks only has 180,000 kilometres on it. I would be happy to drive it for a couple of more years but just felt like a new car.
The clutches on the 2002 and the E21 were replaced at about 125,000 miles plus or minus; the last three 3’s never did need a new clutch. None of the five BMW’s I have owned so far ever had their heads off. Can't remember which cars and when but I did have water pumps replaced before the E36. The E46 had a slight vibration during braking that showed up within a few thousand kilometres after purchase; the ball joints were replaced a couple of times and new brake rotors installed once in the first 80,000 kilometres. That seemed to solve it and no problems have occurred now for the last 100,000 kilometres or so. I drive mostly highway miles and my driving style is conservative. On modern 3’s using synthetic oils I have been adding an oil and filter change halfway between service intervals, i.e. an oil change about every 12,000 kilometres. All my modern 3's have been very tight with no oil added between changes. Last edited by xyz123; 10-05-2005 at 02:36 PM.. |
