Coding off Accoustic Pedestrian Warning on G30 with HU_MGU (iDrive 7 Lite)

Hi There,
I recently bought 9/2019 BMW 530e (MY2020 G30) with iDrive 7 Lite (HU_MGU) and I'm trying to switch off Accoustic Pedestrian Warning (a.k.a. Space Shuttle sound outside to warn pedestrians under 30kph). I coded "VSG_HMI_MENUE" under Headunit module which enables the Checkbox option in iDrive but clicking it does nothing. The checkmark doesn't get unchecked. Any hints to make this work? I understand it should allow one-time deactivation of the warning sound but re-activates upon next drive. This would help with those late nights arrivals in order not to wake the whole neighbourhood.

The next step would be to code the car to remember the setting.

Forum members in i3 section were able to code this on NU_HBT_EVO but I couldn't find anything for HU_MGU.

Thanks!

They likely made coding this off hard or impossible since it is a legal requirement to have this sound. I am honestly baffled every time I see a post like this asking to turn it off. Never understand them. You can't really hear it from inside the car unless you have the windows down and even then it isn't all that big a deal. The sound isn't any louder than an ICE car driving by so I'm not sure how it bothers your neighborhood...

It is designed to allow people to not be hit by your car who may be visually impaired or otherwise distracted... Leave it alone

My other cars including a Tesla from the same year don't need this, it is not a legal requirement where I live so I want to turn this off as it is noticeably louder than a typical gasoline car as my wife pointed out the first day I brought it home and hates hearing it ever since. And that is during a day. Last night, I came home very late and was told she could hear it from the moment I turned into our street which is about 100 meters away. Yes, I live in a very quiet neighbourhood so I'd like the option to turn it off.

Tesla may not be following the rules. Wouldn't be the first time they ignored them.

The sound is a legal requirement in the US and the EU and the country in your sidebar is an EU member country so it would be a requirement there too...

In April 2014, the European Parliament approved legislation that requires the mandatory use of acoustic vehicle alerting systems (AVAS). Manufacturers must install an AVAS system in four-wheeled electric and hybrid electric vehicles that are approved from July 1, 2019, and to all new quiet electric and hybrid vehicles registered from July 2021. The vehicle must make a continuous noise level of at least 56 dBA (within 2 meters) if the car is going 20 km/h (12 mph) or slower, and a maximum of 75 dBA.[4]
G30 cars got this sound starting on July, 1 2019 with MY2020 aligning exactly with EU legal requirements.

Thanks for the link, I'll definitely measure the noise levels over the weekend Reading this, maybe there would at least be a way to lower the speed threshold to 20kph instead of current 30kph and still comply with the EU law.

If anyone is interested: 2 meters away, car was standing still and I measured 68 dB using my iPhone app when car was in Drive. When Reverse was engaged, I measured 75 dB standing at the front of the car 2 meters away. Although not scientific test, it’s pretty loud in my book...

How much noise does it make with the engine on (you can turn it on via Sport Mode)? If it is less, then you can turn on sport mode when you're close to home and go about it that way. And visually impaired persons can still hear the engine.

My 530e was manufactured after July 19 and it doesn’t have it - I’m in the UK so was part of the EU then - perhaps BMW knew we would be leaving under Brexit so no need to fit in the UK ! I know the car was built after July 19 as it has the updated battery, ID7 Lite and I rec’d updates as it was being manufactured. I didn’t order it until August and with all the options it had to be a build and not a stock car.

I bought a new XF when it was a requirement to have DLR lights but my car didn’t have them. Jaguar said that when the regulations come in they only apply to new models so the LCI would have to have it but pre LCI wouldn’t. Perhaps other countries make the regulation apply for all cars from the date it is issued.

Are you certain this is missing? BMW noted this was added to all G30 cars after 7/1. If yours is missing that would be a manufacturing problem. Not bad if you don’t like the sound. But worth looking into what else was missed.

Absolutely certain it isn’t on the car. Doesn’t seem to be anything missing. The car had a total software re-install Dec 2019 and then the July 2020 update so nothing in the software can be missing.

Did a bit of digging on the web and it is the same as Jaguar said about the DLR’s. The artificial noise had to be installed for all new models from 19 with a 2 year transition period and then from 2021 all cars manufactured.

Nothing I read to date suggests that BMW made this market specific. It all looked like BMW made it standard for all markets in MY2020. But perhaps they did make it optional in the UK.

A glance at this MY2020 in the UK lists the car as having this as a standard safety feature. As “eDrive Exterior Sound”.

I am convinced that if your car is missing this sound BMW forgot to add hardware during your build. But I could very well be off. Here in the US we get a car spec sheet with our car that notes everything included. Mine has this on it. If you got something similar in the UK perhaps that can clarify it.

Not sure how it shows on MDecoder since that site doesn't work for me (looks like that was where you did yours).

I used Bimmer.Work and it shows for me as:

But I am surprised it wasn't on your build even though the UK BMW site lists it as a standard feature.

In case it helps anyone else...

At a complete loss, I emailed Bimmercode support about this, who directed me to this setting:

Receiver Audio Module > Expert mode > VSG_WAVE_FILES > change to "file_14"

...to get rid of this annoyance on my G20 330e.

Unfortunately, whilst this did get rid of the VSG sound, it had an adverse impact on the audio function / iDrive system, causing it to crash at startup, resulting in having to revert the setting back to "file_1".

Having another poke around, I coded the following setting, and hoped for the best:

Receiver Audio Module > Expert mode > VSG_FUNCTION > change to "inactive"

And hey presto! VSG gone, no errors, and no adverse impact on anything else!
