pretty hard to save 200 lbs though...

2019 special edition being released Q2 2019? It is Q2 now and any new model being announced should be a 2020 assuming July production begins 2020. Or maybe it doesn't.....

It's a package guys. You add it on or not. It gives you a sporty look straight from factory.

It might cost a fraction of the cost per month vs buying it outright after acquisition.

Yes, you may not get all carbon parts but bottom line your adding a level of style.

Does your dealership have many 540i production slots available for May/June?

My local dealer has very few 540 and 550 slots, but has plenty of 530i/e slots. Lead me to believe AG is getting ready for the rumored engine change for MY2020. Either way, seems odd they'd release a special edition in May (it hasn't even been released yet, this is just pre-news) when there's less than 60 days left to build a MY2019 car. Assuming a slot is even available.

Nope the opposite will happen.

The direction the brand has taken since about 2010 has turned off the vocal minority of enthusiasts, but 95% of their customers love this stuff.

Some of this is tasteful, but the idea of slapping all this at once onto a relatively boring dad car is what makes it look gimmicky to me. It fits BMW's motto of providing customers the image/look of being sporty without actually making said car sporty.

If it is carbon edition it should be fully carbon fiber body. Else it is just carbon fiber package, and still a stretch. That said, these are nice mods

Can (US) buyers order that matte black rear bumper trim individually? Blacking out that area seems like a nice touch.

It might be a boring dad car to you but I enjoy mine a lot and look forward to driving it each and every day. It is just one sweet ride and have to say a huge improvement over my old E90.

Don’t take this the wrong way the G30 is a spectacular car and I love mine, but personally I prefer my e90 to my G30, but everyone has different priorities. The thing about the G30 is that as a daily for me it is boring as hell. It’s comfortable and I like the styling, but it’s bland.

Take it into the canyons though and it’s surprisingly fun and capable. There’s a spectacular car hidden in there and when you get into the twisty roads, throw it in sport mode and put the transmission into sport mode, the BMW inside comes to life. In daily driving though it does nothing to excite me whereas my E90 was fun 100% of the time no matter how fast or slow I was going or what types of roads I was driving on.

This carbon package looks pretty good but obviously it’s overpriced and adds no performance benefit. It will go over quite well with my tasteless neighbors in Beverly Hills and all the Chinese at UCLA spending their parents money

We're not referring to the diffuser. We're referring to the rear bumper trim above it. A reference for this distinction is the Carbon Edition this thread is focused on. It has a "M Performance Carbon Rear Diffuser" and a "M Performance Matte Black Rear Bumper Trim."

It's an option. You don't have to get it if you don't want it.

I actually think it is good that BMW is trying new things. Some work, others don't. But if you don't try. You will never know for sure.

Well, considering the vehicle performance impact of that carbon edition package, I can think of many more useful things on which to spend $4,668, such as booze. BMW is getting tacky and silly.
The announcement lists the M Sport Package and M Sport Brakes as included, which are $3,600 (540i) or $5,050 (530i because it adds leather) and $650, respectively. Assuming that the MSport package on the Carbon Edition includes all of the content it does for other models, the $4,668 could represent something of a bargain. At least for those that like the carbon bits.
