A nice start to the week..
DISCLAIMER - I am not even mad that this happened, it's kind of funny, but it is what it is. Getting it replaced, hopefully not too much out of pocket cost, and move on. It could be worst and thankfully nobody was hurt.
So a few weeks ago, driving in the fwy I got a rock chip that put a small crack in my windshield. Through my insurance, Safelite came the next day and filled/repaired the crack. Was ever-so slightly visible, but I was ok with it. This morning I go to the Trader Joe's in Westlake Village, CA near my work before work, run in and out real quick, 7-8 minutes max. I get to my car and notice something with the windshield. I am assuming a pine cone fell from the trees above, and hit the glass at the right angle that would shatter it? You can definitely see wood residue of some sort. Don't think it would be anything else. It's at the dealer now getting replaced, with my heads up display, driving assists, cameras, etc, really did not feel comfortable having Safelite do the replacement even though I have the OEM rider - I prefer to have BMW certified technicians replacing the glass. Insurance only covers some portion of it, so will be a bit of a battle trying to get them to cover the entire cost. I also don't think the chip repair sacrificed the structural integrity of the glass, since the repair itself was still intact and it did not shatter through the chip repair. Wow - that's one heck of an impact crater. Did you see anything on the ground near the car? If it was something that fell from above (and I seriously doubt it was a pine cone), you'd see it. If you've ever tried to smash auto glass, you'd get an appreciation of how much force is required. That impact looks more like a branch or someone swinging a sharp piece of wood.
Another good case for a dashcam. Anyway, hope they do a good job fixing it. |

looks more like a golf club hit to me... interesting you're out of pocket on windshield glass. I have AIG and I did have to have a small repair done - safelite - all covered via insurance, no deductible. And then I did have to have my Audi's windshield entirely replaced, same thing, no deductible, fully covered.

my windshield replacement comprehensive is $500 for oem glass, but done through safelite. I went ahead and just had the bmw dealer do it, and will fight to get my insurnace to cover the difference as I have the OEM replacement rider, and with all the sensors and heads up display, I would like BMW to replace the windshield since my car just has 4,500 miles on it. |

I got a small chip and decided to have Safelite repair it rather than replacing my windshield (I have all the cameras and sensors). I did ask the tech while he was at my house about calibration and he said that they can and do do it but not remotely...one has to come to the Safelite facility for calibration.

I was just gonna say same. Most dealers don't do windshield or rear window replacements. They outsource to glass replacement companies. However, for sure it will be OEM approved glass.

If you didn't do this, you might want to check with Trader Joes to see if they have any video coverage of the time you went in and the damage happened. Maybe you could get the police involved if you think it was an intentional hit. --Bob

Excellent point. It does look like a hammer blow and the store may well have video coverage.

so i went back to the parking space where my car was, and right to the left i found this really heavy and hard pinecone, and it had glass on it as well. I am almost certain this fell from the tree from way above, guessing 40-50 ft, and hit the windshield at the right angle, and considering how heavy it is. You can also see the residue from this in the closeup as well.
