Year, Model, Miles and Issues
I wanted to start a thread to document any issues (or no issues) with our 5 series over time.
This thread will be a good place to see the differences, if any, in reliability between models. 2022, M550i, 2570 miles, rattling passenger headrest |

2018 540i - 38,500 miles to date
Purchased as CPO 12/2021 with 30k on the clock. No issues reflected in service history, at time of purchase. Since I've had it (8k miles so far): 1 - steering column sticking: tried to fix with lubrication, hopefully will replace the column since that didn't work 2 - rear window shade sticking - replaced the switch under warranty 3 - ambient light under dash failed - replaced under warranty 4 - A/C started hissing unusually - replaced evaporator under warranty 1 is a known model issue. 2 & 3 are annoying but don't seem super unusual four years into existence, and warranty handled. 4 feels a little early. But it's an AL car that's now in West TN, so the A/C gets worked hard. Would have been way more annoying without warranty.

2018 540i xDrive - 30K miles - Interior Ambient Lighting malfunction, repaired under warranty. As others have experienced, it took two tries for the dealership service center to get it working right.

2017 540i. Just hit 80k kms/50k miles.
No real issues to date (fingers crossed) expect the annoying 20" tire and rims; Here is the two common items I dealt with; Upper air flaps changed under warranty at 62k; I didn't really notice anything tbh for this as the car was at the dealer while they were installing my MPPSK and CEL popped up due to air flaps. They held the car for a day extra while I was with a 3er loaner. Bowden cable on rear door freezing which again a common issue. Happened at 67k in Toronto winter. End up fixing it myself as CPO won't cover and dealer wanted $1200 to fix both rear doors. Took me $120 in parts and good part of 2hrs. Both are common problems with G30s; more feels like maintenance items than issue! |

2021 540i M Sport. 7270 miles. Not one warranty issue.
Had a nail in the left rear tire in the center 6 months or so ago. Had to replace the 20in Pirelli tire. Not BMW's fault. Will be replacing all with non-run flats soon and a spare tire kit. |

2019 540i M sport. I've had my share of annoyances over 15000 miles so far.... all replaced under warranty:
- one of the B&W speakers - active shutters on grille - entire headlight assembly (can't recall which side) - ambient lighting strip (took 2 trips like others said) they did replace the emergency communication battery before it threw the error. |

2018 M550 35,000 miles
- Leaking Turbo Coolant lines, replaced under warranty (known issue) - Stress Fractures in Guibo, replaced under warranty (dealer noticed it, not me, known issue for many years across all models) - False Passenger Seatbelt Warning, SIB to zip ties wires performed (known issue) - Oil consumption between oil changes, solved by switching to 5W-40. That's it. I do get a passenger restraint malfunction every now and then, but it can wait until the next visit.

Ambient light under dash replaced under warranty. Lower radiator blind also replaced under warranty. Front rotors warped. Rotors and pads replaced out of pocket. Steering Column complaining when retracting. Will have it looked at when I bring it in for annual inspection/emission test. I do get the passenger restraint malfunction very infrequently. Will have them look at it again. Had the passenger door handle lock up once on a very cold morning. Never happened again. |

2018 530e. lower grill slats fixed under warranty; bad PHEV battery cell; BMW replaced entire battery pack as warranty item; while doing maintenance toward end of 4th year of ownership, BMW found the auxiliary batter was exhausted and also replaced that as warranty item.
Other than that, regular maintenance and a set of tires. |

17 540 warranty items - dashboard ambient lighting and front 2 door ambient lighting, active grill, aux battery, and drive door rattle. Driver side control arm was out of pocket from a pothole
18 740 warranty - active grill, front wheel hub bearing s, all ambient lighting except the sunroof one, rattle fix in front headliner area, valve cover gasket, and the whole dashboard was replaced because the nappa leather started peeling by the windshield (was surprised they did that over trying to glue it back in place) 19 m550 warranty - going in soon for rear guibo and if they find anything else when it's getting serviced Overall just small stuff

2018 540i, 18,500 miles in total. No significant issues although went back to the dealer once with a case of disappearing coolant (no leaks - guess underfilled from factory). Given current market and state of economy I will probably keep this for a few years yet!

2019 purchased 1/22 w/~296xx miles. Currently just over 32K miles with only a battery replacement under warranty. Also have a 2014 535i with ~78K miles and nadda (yes, including VC & OFH gaskets) as best I can remember; just fluid changes & tires.

Looking at the spreadsheet I just realized that the dealer replaced BOTH batteries and both rear tires as part of the CPO process. I'm glad they did it as I'm sure that'd been really cheap.
