Question Power rear sunshade mounting points broke off

Absolutely no reason for them to break other than being crappy plastic - I leave (left) it in the up position 24/7. Now my car is even hotter parking in the sun. Any idea how to do this repair?

I got the aluminum slider/mount kit

But need to get the broken plastic sliders OUT, pins OUT, and all these in. Looks like a bear of a job to do it in the car, and I don't have a clue how to get the sunshade to my workbench without just pulling crap apart in the rear deck/C pillar area. Trying to avoid tearing into my baby if possible.

Mine just went wonky yesterday. One of the control arms became detached from the shade. Haven't begun to investigate. Hope to learn some repair tips. I'll share what I find.

OK, digging into this problem. Yes the plastic bits are broken. I ordered a repair kit (plastic) from a large online retailer. Problem is they don't fit. The G30 sunshade is obviously different than the older models, for which kits seem to be available (AGA, others). The track that the bits fit into and slide across is a different shape than the parts I ordered.

Has anyone sourced repair parts for the G30 sunshade? Really don't want to pay over $700 USD to replace the whole assembly when only a few plastic bits are broken. Grrr!

Any chance you guys have some good independent BMW repair shop nearby who could offer some ideas as to potential fixes and costs? I always used to do much of my own work but I must admit as I have gotten older I first have some professionals check it out. Maybe a good indy would be willing to do the repair with the newer aluminum (or plastic) parts at a reasonable cost, rather than just replace the whole device. Just a thought. --Bob

This is an easy repair, if the right parts are available. With the sunshade in the extended position, it is simple to remove a screw and take apart the end bits and extract the broken part. I just cannot locate the correct replacement parts as BMW or 3rd parties do not make them available (from what I can find). Would love to be proven wrong.

I don’t believe anyone makes any replacements, unfortunately. +1 to this issue, need new sliders as bmw decided plastic was a good material for this piece

Would this be a good use case for one of those online custom 3D printing sites?

e.g. https://www.xometry.com/capabilities...nting-service/

I’m planning to LiDAR scan my super glued tabs and get some machined. Maybe will order 10-20 and put on eBay?

Please let us know if this becomes reality.

I've been considering to purchase a salvaged whole rear sunshade assembly for around $300 USD. New is around $800.

I reviewed the replacement procedure for the assembly, and it is not trivial.

Sure wish we could source the individual parts to replace the broken plastic bits.

Update - getting the sliders out is actually really easy after I figured it out. There is a t5 star point screw on each side of the shade that when removed allows the end cap to slide off (you only need remove one screw and one cap). It takes gentle pulling and it pops off so go slow. The sliders come right out after that, don’t worry about the orientation bc they only go in one way. I’m still figuring out if there is a right and left slider or if they are identical. To get the top portion of the slider out of the actuator arm, you have to poke out what looks like a rivet from the windshield side of the arm. It comes out towards you and it is just a little plastic push pin. I’m working on getting the model of the sliders now and will come back here when I have more info or a prototype
